OBLIVION SEASON
Feature Film | 90 min. | Iran
Directed by: Abbas Rafei
An ex-prostitute starts a new life by marrying her lover but leaving the shadow of her dark past is not as easy as it seemed. Now, she is the prisoner of her husband and, in order to earn her freedom, she should fight with the masculine society.
"In Iran's today society, making a film about prostitutes is a real challenge because the society and government deny their very existence. It's even more difficult if your protagonist is an ex-prostitute.
I tried to show a woman behind bars and fences all over today's Tehran as she tries to overcome all the intolerance and traditional and religious dogmatism in her society in order to live and stay alive. She lives in a society which doesn't wish to let her forget the past", says director Abbas Rafei.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
THE MUSIC BOX
Animation | 11 min. | Canada
Directed by: Joe Chang
This animated short film is based on a real story that is set in China during the Cultural Revolution of 1967. It is about a young boy, Liang Liang, whose family is suddenly taken to the countryside by Red Guards. He is able to grab the only thing he treasures which is a western style music box, and is careful not to expose it to the guards since it was linked to western culture.
The film mirrors tragedies that befall children and families who are forced to leave their homes, due to war, colonization and political campaigns - unfortunately a situation which is all too common today.
"This is the first time I created an animated film that is so personal to me and is autobiographical. While my previous film in Canada was about immigration, this is about my personal background and how it affected me as an artist. This story is not a 'children's' story, but a dramatic one about a child who suffers loss and post-traumatic stress.
This is a 4K hand drawn/painted animation. I am happy to use this method, especially since traditional hand drawn animation has been left behind with the advent of computer animation", says Joe Chang.
THE DONBASS CHILDREN
Documentary | 60 min. | Bulgaria
Directed by: Lubomir Dankov
This is a documentary about the Donbass war. You will hear the stories of so-called 'ordinary people'. These people suffered from irrational strikes on civilian targets. They are victims of someone's desire to wage war on their territory at all costs.
The purpose of the film is to arouse interest in the ongoing years-long armed conflict and to make people think about the responsibility of each of us for peace in Europe.
"When I first went to Donbass as a journalist, I felt ashamed. Shame on the 'fellow' journalists, who deliberately avoid the topic of Donbass, shame on the whole 'democratic community' that has buried its head in the sand.
It is hard to believe that deliberate war crimes have been committed daily in the geographical centre of Europe, but it’s a fact.
The worst thing is that all this can be quickly and easily stopped, but maintaining an armed conflict in the area is, for some people, a win-win business.
Darkness gives power to evil. Keep yourself informed. It is up to you much more than you think", says Lubomir Dankov.
