New Power Competencies to be used in Crisis Management

Executive Summary

This article introduces a set of power competencies derived from integrating multiple forms of intelligence in crisis management. These power competencies complement the six excellent core competencies (Anticipate, Understand, Prevent, Contain, Recover, Learn) presented by Jeroen Kraaijenbrink in his latest LinkedIn post titled: How to deal with a crisis. Our article aims to present new power competencies that can support the six core ones mentioned below to enhance an organization's ability to navigate complex crises in the modern business landscape. Organizations can create a more robust, adaptive, and effective crisis management strategy by developing these new power competencies.

Introduction

In today's Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous (VUCA) world, traditional crisis management approaches are excellent for today but might need to be revised for the times to come. The integration of multiple forms of intelligence—Cognitive, Cultural (CQ), Emotional (EQ), Diverse, Ethical, and Inclusive (DEII), Business (BQ), Artificial (AI), and Ultra-learning (UI)—into crisis management is paving the way for a new set of power competencies. These competencies represent advanced capabilities that organizations can develop to excel in crisis management for the future of work.

Power Competencies in Crisis Management

1. Adaptive Foresight

Derived from Cognitive Intelligence, Artificial Intelligence, Ultra-learning, and Business Intelligence.

Description: Adaptive Foresight is the ability to continuously update and refine crisis predictions based on rapidly changing data and emerging patterns. This competency goes beyond simple anticipation by incorporating real-time data analysis, machine learning predictions, and rapid knowledge assimilation to create a dynamic and evolving understanding of potential crises.

Application:

Implement AI-driven scenario modeling that updates in real time based on emerging data.

Develop cross-functional teams trained in rapid pattern recognition and data interpretation.

Create adaptive crisis prediction dashboards that integrate multiple data sources and learning algorithms.

?

2. Cultural Resonance

Derived from Cultural Intelligence, Emotional Intelligence, and Diverse, Ethical, and Inclusive Intelligence

Description: Cultural Resonance is the ability to navigate and communicate effectively across diverse cultural contexts during a crisis. This competency ensures that crisis management strategies are culturally appropriate, emotionally sensitive, and inclusive of all stakeholder groups.

Application:

Develop crisis communication protocols that adapt to different cultural norms and expectations.

Train crisis management teams in cross-cultural empathy and communication.

Create culturally adaptive decision-making frameworks for crisis response.

?

3. Ethical Competency

Derived from Diverse, Ethical, and Inclusive Intelligence, Emotional Intelligence, and Cultural Intelligence

Description: Ethical Competence is the capacity to make morally sound decisions under the pressure of a crisis while considering diverse perspectives and long-term consequences. This competency ensures that crisis management actions align with organizational values and societal expectations.

Application:

Develop AI-powered knowledge management systems that facilitate rapid learning and skill acquisition.

Implement adaptive learning programs that evolve based on crisis experiences.

Create cross-functional crisis response teams trained in agile learning methodologies.

?

5. Empathetic Leadership

Derived from Emotional Intelligence, Diverse, Ethical, and Inclusive Intelligence, and Cultural Intelligence

Description: Empathetic Leadership is the ability to lead with compassion, understanding, and inclusivity during times of crisis. This competency ensures that crisis management efforts consider the emotional and psychological impacts on all stakeholders.

Application:

Implement leadership training programs focused on crisis-specific empathy and emotional intelligence.

Develop support systems for leaders to manage their emotional well-being during crises.

Create inclusive decision-making processes that consider diverse emotional perspectives.

?

6. Technological Synergy

Derived from Artificial Intelligence, Business Intelligence, and Cognitive Intelligence

Description: Technological Synergy is the ability to seamlessly integrate human expertise with AI and data-driven insights in crisis management. This competency leverages human intuition and machine processing strengths to enhance decision-making and crisis response.

Application:

Develop AI-augmented crisis management platforms that integrate human expertise and machine learning.

Implement training programs on human-AI collaboration in crisis scenarios.

Create hybrid crisis response teams that combine human experts with AI systems.

?

7. Resilient Adaptability

Derived from: UI, EQ, BQ

Description: Resilient Adaptability is the capacity to rapidly redesign organizational structures, processes, and strategies in response to crisis-induced changes. This competency ensures that organizations can recover from crises and evolve and thrive in their aftermath.
