New Petya Ransomware Targeting HR Professionals

New Petya Ransomware Targeting HR Professionals

I have seen a few updates regarding a new ransomware targeting HR Professionals.  Since many of my friends on LinkedIn specialize in recruiting and HR, I am writing this post to warn of this new threat.

PC World shared an article on the Petya Ransomware.  You can view it here: https://www.pcworld.com/article/3046626/security/petya-ransomware-overwrites-mbrs-locking-users-out-of-their-computers.html

What is imperative to know is that at this time there is no way to decrypt the hard drive without paying the ransome.  If you have been unfortunate in the past and felt the impact of Cryptolocker or Cryptowall, you may have been able to recover files from a backup.  With the new Petya ransomware, the encryption takes place on the hard drive itself.

Keep your sanity and your security by double checking the sender of the email.  If it's someone unfamiliar think twice about downloading the file.  The files in the Petya Ransomware look like dropbox files, specifically targeting HR Professionals who are used to receiving files containing resumes or job applications. Tricky, tricky!

With the high volume of emails that we receive on the daily, it is easy to go into autopilot.  It is imperative to keep your vigilance with your email, as these threats become more common.

If email security is something on your mind or if your company could use some support on email solutions, you can reach my team at [email protected].
