New Perth Bridge Over Swan River Set to Become Iconic Digital Canvas
The West Australian government has revealed bold plans for a striking new pedestrian and cyclist bridge across Perth's Swan River, set to become an iconic feature of the city’s skyline. The multi-million-dollar structure will not only serve as a vital transport link but will also double as a vibrant digital canvas, showcasing captivating light displays and animated art.
Premier Roger Cook highlighted the bridge's significance as more than just a crossing.
"This bridge will become a digital masterpiece, displaying a diverse range of images, messages, and moving visuals," Mr. Cook said. "Its unique lighting design will bring this essential infrastructure to life, transforming it into a key visual landmark for the city."
The $100 million project will comprise two distinct bridges connecting the Perth CBD to Victoria Park via Heirisson Island. While initial costs were lower, the project’s budget expanded due to rising steel and manufacturing expenses, a factor Transport Minister Rita Saffioti linked to global economic conditions.
A Groundbreaking First for Perth
Ms. Saffioti described the bridge’s lighting displays as an unprecedented feature for Western Australia.
"This structure will serve as a dynamic canvas, offering Western Australia a unique platform to project its stories, landscapes, and art to the world," she said. "It will undoubtedly become a focal point for both locals and tourists, fostering community engagement for decades."
While the bridge promises dazzling displays, Ms. Saffioti reassured that it won’t distract drivers on the adjacent road bridge. Extensive testing has been conducted to ensure the displays—whether intricate artworks or animations like kangaroos in motion—are visible without compromising safety.
Celebrating Culture and Advancing Construction
The project also emphasises cultural significance, with plans to incorporate a powerful recognition of traditional Indigenous owners on Heirisson Island, deepening its ties to the region’s heritage.
Construction is already in progress, with the first bridge module now installed from the Victoria Park side, marking a significant milestone. Fifteen additional segments remain, and daily work is underway to ensure the project is completed by year’s end.
Once finished, the Swan River bridge will stand as a symbol of Perth's evolving identity—where cutting-edge technology and rich cultural acknowledgment intersect to create a lasting landmark for generations to come.
