New Paths and Adventures Await!

New Paths and Adventures Await!

I've been busy since being laid off a week ago! Within the first day, I updated my resume, tweaked my LinkedIn profile, reconnected with several career advancement pros and head hunters, and had two productive phone interviews.

After a few days of speaking with former co-workers and colleagues, I started thinking about new possibilities outside of mortgage processing. I began reviewing some of the hundreds of articles I'd written, client press kits, blog posts, social media work and pitches, photos and videos.

That's when I stumbled on my first (terribly grainy) video interview with Rachel Ray, filmed right before she took the stage at a New York Times Talk in New York City in 2010. That day I also interviewed Julie Powers, of Julie & Julia fame, and got to hear both women share their stories, along with journalist, writer and filmmaker, Nora Ephron. It was an exciting and exhilarating evening - but sadly the interviews I shot did not end up being used.

That's because I did not have professional gear. Once I saw the footage, I knew I needed to get an HD video camera, a good microphone and a tripod - fast! That first interview lead to taking a crash video course, buying the right equipment, attending social media and other conferences, and more AMAZING interviews with folks like Dennis Crowley, the founder of foursquare, International Best-Selling Author, Mary Higgins Clark, Ragy Thomas, the CEO and founder of Sprinklr, and American Idol, Haley Reinhart.

I learned SO much from interviewing celebrities and business gurus, as well as main street mom and pop shop owners and social entrepreneurs - all of which expanded my skill sets, value and opportunities, many of which would have never happened if I did not choose to pursue more video interviews and reporting.

It can be very enlightening to review the twists and turns of your career. We've all had to navigate miscellaneous bumps along the way, and many of us have made major career changes to pay the bills. Sometimes these new directions work out well, sometimes it can feel like you're not making any headway at all. All your work adventures can be leveraged, by identifying and sharing your accomplishments. Take the time to identify what you're passionate about, as well as your unique skill sets and expertise. Doing this can help you to communicate your value more confidently- which may result in a totally new and exciting career path or better opportunities in your current company.

I just read two very informative job search and resume writing newsletters from Kathryn Sollmann and Kathy Keshemberg, so I'll be sharing some of their tips in my next post.
