New Orleans Carnival 2020

Chez Palmiers Bed and Breaksfast

Mardi Gras has been a part of New Orleans, Mobile, and the Third Coast since the region was first explored by Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville who staked claim and defended the Louisiana Territory for the France Monarch.

Carnival began on 12th night (Jan 6th) of Christmas and Mardi Gras is on the February 25, which is Fat Tuesday, and the last day of the Carnival season - the day before Ash Wednesday, and the first day of Lent. With countless festivals celebrating, everything from Jazz to Po-Boys, the Big Easy offers an array of colorful events most any weekend, and why you can't help but fall in love with the Crescent City

While Mardi Gras was being celebrated back in France in 1699, the story goes he christened their landing site “La Pointe du Mardi Gras” and had a celebration with his men. It’s a small tributary that emptied into the Mississippi river about 60 miles from where New Orleans sits now, but interesting enough, there are claims by some in Gulfport that Ship Island was the actual site of the first American Mardi Gras where d'Iberville camped.

And, although the Big Easy is best-known for its Mardi Gras revelry, the Port City of Alabama - Mobile, which was founded in 1702 by French settlers, and they too lay claim to the first Mari Gras in the new world.

Mardi Gras

Regardless where it began, explorers and settlers throughout the Third Coast all arrived with a tradition of Mardi Gras and adapted theirs to the new world. The Carnival Season features numerous parades and opportunities for locals and visitors alike to eat, drink, and be merry. This season culminates on Fat Tuesday, an all-day celebration where the third coast lets loose before the beginning of the Lent. It begins on 12th night (Jan 6th) of Christmas and Mardi Gras always culminates on Fat Tuesday, which is the last day of the Carnival and the day before Ash Wednesday and the first day of Lent.

Mardi Gras traditions can be traced back all the way to medieval Europe, then called “Boeuf Gras” or “fatted calf”. The new French settlers brought their carnival celebration traditions all the way from France to the New World. New Orleans was established in 1718, and by the 1730s, Mardi Gras was an annual celebration. Back then, Mardi Gras was not celebrated with parades, but elegant and exclusive society balls.

The Neighborhood Korner

By the 1830s, street processions of people in masks with carriages and horseback riders were held in New Orleans. In 1856, the first Krewe was established. The Krewe of Comus brought magic and mystery with astounding floats and masked balls, while members remained anonymous.

In 1870, the first account of Mardi Gras “throws” was recorded by the second established Krewe, the Twelfth Night Revelers.

In 1872, a King of the Carnival was invented to preside over the daytime parade. The Mardi Gras colors were also established at this time: purple for justice, gold for power, and green for faith. The year after, floats began to be constructed entirely in New Orleans instead of France.

Rex also came on the seen in 1872, and one of the oldest groups that creates the pageantry of Mardi Gras. After the civil war a group of business men forms Rex to attract tourists and sorely needed businesses to locate in the Crescent City during and after reconstruction.

Bed and Breakfast New Orleans

In 1875, Governor Warmoth signed the “Mardi Gras Act,” making Fat Tuesday a legal holiday in Louisiana, and we couldn’t be prouder that it still remains as such!

Today, the crowds that turn up to Mardi Gras in New Orleans and throughout the Third Coast are absolutely insane. In 2015, 31,000 riders participated in the Endymion parade and a crowd of 15 to 20 people deep lined up all along Canal trying to get those coveted beads. It’s not uncommon for people to bring large bags to lug thousands (yes, THOUSANDS) of beads and trinkets home from the parades.

Mardi Gras balls are still prevalent in New Orleans culture. They are exclusive and by invitation only, and many of them require a mask to be worn. If you ever have a chance to go to a Mardi Gras ball – go! You will feel like an exclusive member of society, and most of them are open bar.

Today, kings and queens are still selected to preside over their krewe’s parade. Most kings and queens are chosen from within the krewe’s own ranks, but some krewes such as Bacchus and Endymion, invite celebrity guests to ride in the parades as their monarch.
