The new Normal..? ?? #whoyaknow Ep.289

On Episode #289, the WYK Show invites Jim Tam and Ashley Owens .

Jim Tam is VP at Keystone Partners and heads up their DFW market. Keystone Partners provides career transition, leadership development & executive coaching services to organizations. Before joining Keystone, Jim led global & domestic business units at Citi, Hertz, G4S, Kastle Systems, and Gnowbe.

In conversation with Jim about employment in the post covid situation, he says that the whole work from home thing has helped the employees because a lot of opportunities are now offered to them. As an employee one can apply anywhere, even around the world, as long as they are allowed to work remotely.?

According to him, most employees now have a voice. Before it was the corporation, dictating policies and the employees had to accept them. Now employees have a choice. Also, it's not only when you're interviewing or you get an offer when you can negotiate. Right now, companies are really focusing on making sure that their employees stay.

Talking about what it costs a company to retain, train and hire a new employee, Jim estimates that it is anywhere between 50-200% of the cost of recruiting, especially for an executive position. If companies don't retain their employees, they can be spending a whole lot of money.?

Jim also talks about the opportunity cost for the companies when a job is vacant. For all the time that a job is vacant, money isn't produced. Or, companies moving forwards as fast as they can because all the jobs are filled.?

Speaking of his thoughts on resignations, Jim says that people have got use to a different way of work. They can show that they are productive even while they are at home. Digital Fatigue has caused a lot of people to do what they want to do. A lot of people are evaluating "Do you wanna work to live or live to work?"

On how to stand out and how to get noticed, Jim says that if you are sending the same resume to multiple types of jobs, multiple types of industries, you're just throwing something against the wall. It depends on how you have the first interaction with the recruiter.

Here is what Jim thinks about coaches. Once a coach places people, he gets some feedback, then more and more, you're to learn from their expertise. After you get an offer, a coach can also help you negotiate your salary.

On Ageism, Jim says that it is a real problem and something that people don't talk about. People have a perception that older people tend not to adapt to technology well, or there might be some physical demands that an older person might not be able to do. But this is the market to do it. There are about 11 million jobs and there are only 8 million people available to work in the US. So your chances significantly increase. The recruiters can't afford to be choosy anymore.

Ashley Owens is a Networking Concierge & works as your strategic partner during networking events & conferences.? She trains & coach's teams to become an authority at generating revenue by networking with intention.

Ashley talks about the importance of emotional intelligence. People need to know about themselves before they go to a new position or leave a position.?

According to Ashley, networking, at its foundation, is making a friend. The networking component has such a bad taste in people's mouths because they immediately think about it as a transaction. But the transaction doesn't have to be monetary. It can be resources, referrals, introductions, or an inspirational comment.

Talking about how introverts become visible, Ashley says that they network online. They don't have to go to in-person networking events.? They should work on having a personal brand, understanding who the subject matter experts are in their own industry to follow, encouraging, engaging, and collaborating in some way, and finding an extrovert that you can partner with.

For those who have problems with videos, Ashley says that videos aren't only the ways where you can showcase your skills. There is podcasting, getting interviews on the podcast, article writing, shared blog writing, shared webinar, doing small clips, and making someone else edit it.

Ashley also says that nurturing relationships is so important. Start the conversions now by catching up. Ask people who they are doing. Because at the end of the day they're gonna reciprocate with the same questions.?

According to Ashely, it is very essential to follow up. 80% of the revenue comes from at least four or more follow-ups. That's the same case with job seekers. The follow-ups can come in many forms, in emails, in phone calls, in commenting or posting on their social media profiles.
