New normal

There’s no question that people are struggling with the effects of social isolation and loneliness during this collective health crisis. Our workplaces and networks no longer provide the personal interactions to which so many of us are accustomed. And with a wet-coast winter around the corner, outdoor socializing is bound to become less appealing.

But the doors of Terminal City Club are open, as they have been since mid-May, with measures and protocols in place to help keep our space safe and welcoming. It’s something I’m grateful for every day, because it gives me, our team and our members, a comfortable place to be outside of our homes –and also a bit of that much-needed sense of social connection.

Of course, visiting the Club looks a little different right now. Everyone who arrives must check in at the Member Services desk to complete a daily health declaration, ensuring that (among other things) they feel well, have not travelled outside of BC, and are not awaiting the results of a COVID-19 test. Complimentary face masks are available. (Staff wear masks at all times, and all individuals in the Club are encouraged to wear masks whenever possible.)

Inside, physical distancing is the most obvious change. All of our dining areas and lounges have been reconfigured to ensure that we are following public health best practices and meeting all regulations. We have the benefit of vast amounts of indoor space, and we are using almost all of it to spread out! Tables are generously spaced, and seatings are limited to a maximum of six people – Dr. Henry’s orders. Patio spaces have remained open, and the Club’s cell phone policy has been updated to allow for individual workspaces throughout the Club. Reservations are recommended, because capacity limits are strictly observed and not negotiable.

In the Fitness Centre (gym, pool, and squash courts), reservations are required. Physical distancing, special cleaning protocols, and the addition of plexiglass dividers help to ensure a safe and comfortable space for everyone. Guests are limited to members’ spouses, or their children under 19 who live at home; and our team is working hard to ensure that the gym consistently undergoes extra deep cleaning throughout the day.

For me, seeing our members return throughout the summer and fall and rediscover that sense of connection, has been wonderful – many of them have expressed their genuine surprise and relief at the measures that have been put in place to make TCC once again a welcoming and comfortable space. You can see many of these measures for yourself just by visiting our website, or you can find out more by contacting TCC Member Services.

I believe it’s common these days, to experience a sense of trepidation when entering a new indoor group setting. But many of us are also experiencing those feelings of angst that come from too little social engagement and too much time in one’s own head. TCC has always been a place where members can feel engaged, and connected to something meaningful. Although there have been changes on the surface recently to help keep everyone safe, underneath, TCC is still that place where you can be part of a special community. I look forward to welcoming you soon.
