A new normal
The Corona Virus has been a black swan event, catching governments, business and everyone else by surprise. Whatever early doubt there may have been that lock-down and isolation measures were an overreaction has long since diminished. The world has changed forever, and the full dimensions of that change are still unfolding.
In time, the crisis will pass and things will return to normal. But it will be a new normal. There is now a shared first-hand understanding of what a pandemic means and this understanding is in turn shaping business thinking and decision making.
Right now, business leaders the world over are focused on how to survive and how to protect themselves from future such events. One key area of focus, I believe, will be outsourcing as companies seek to minimise their fixed cost exposure and transition to a volume-based cost model.
Our Freight Manager at MFC, Joanne Kil, says the covid crisis is a reminder of how interconnected we all are these days. She also reckons the outsourcing model offers more resilience to markets in times of stress. I agree.
