New Music Friday - April 26
There are some absolutely amazing songs that have been released this week, but I won’t lie, a lot of these came with dark themes (which I don’t mind but just a PSA).
Below are some of my favorites along with my thoughts and a little bit of lore behind some of the lyrics that are of course all opinion based, so they are not factual.?
The overall theme of this song revolves around the emotions that a man feels after a failed relationship. In this case, Myke Towers and Bad Bunny sing as the role of a man who feels he put more into the relationship than their partner. This man definitely goes through a lot of different emotions, at times wanting the woman back, but then ultimately coming to terms that they are better off separate instead of together.
Bad Bunny sings, “No sé si un "te amo" vale lo mismo cuando es en inglés” which translates to “I don’t know if an “I love you” means the same when said in English.” There has been speculation that Bad Bunny and Kendall Jenner have broken up after being together since February 2023, so I think that many will think that this lyric is a direct reference to Bad Bunny’s relationship with model Kendall as it is suspected that they had a language barrier throughout their relationship.?
The song ends with the chorus being sung by Bad Bunny with a very melancholic harmony in the background with the lyrics:?
Mejor sigue tu camino - It’s better to walk your own path
Ya tú cambiaste y yo no soy el mismo - You changed and I am not the same
Siempre recuerdo lo que un día fuimo' - I always remember what we once used to be
Are you ready to sit back, cry, and think about your life choices? Put this song on NOW. The composition of the piano in the beginning that builds up to the chorus with the additions of violins makes for an absolutely beautiful song.?
Alexander speaks on the feeling of no longer being with somebody that you just feel you might regret further down the line.?

I won't lie, I look for you in strangers eyes, It kills me you don't even care we had to say goodbye, When I know that it'll haunt me 'til the day I die
Twenty One Pilots are known to be the artists with an immense amount of lore and hidden symbolism in their lyrics and music videos. Backslide can be described as the action of doing something bad after doing something good, in other words regressing/relapsing or taking two steps back. Lead singer, Tyler, speaks on his struggles with his mental health in the song Backslide with lyrics like “I don't wanna backslide to where I've started from, There's no chance I will shake this again.”?
The music video starts out with Tyler purchasing some hamburger buns from a convenience store and ends with him at the same convenience store once again doing the same action. I am interpreting this as a sign that he is struggling with his own battles and is indeed “backsliding” as he talks about in the song.?
This video is very cinematically similar to their previously released and popular song “Stressed Out” as Tyler is seen riding a bike through a neighborhood in both videos while talking about his current struggles. The only difference here is that Josh Dun, drummer, is not seen riding with him, but rather waiting for him at the house while grilling burgers since Tyler has the buns.
'Cause I feel the pull, water's over my head, Strength enough for one more time, Reach my hand above the tide, I'll take anything you have, If you could throw me a line
There is no question that Porter Robinson is extremely inspired by the emo scene of the early 2000’s with his newest singles. His most recent single “KNOCK YOURSELF OUT XD” displays that before even listening to the song with the emoji “XD” that was used very often in that time. The game inspired sounds in the background of this song help add to the nostalgia that one feels when listening to this.?
Although this song is filled with happy go lucky sounds, he actually alludes to a deeper message. He touches on the hypocrisy of online culture and the relationship that some fans have with their favorite artists. He states "Physically sick, Crying at the airport, "I'm sorry can I get a pic?" Although not on purpose, I think that sometimes fans forget that the artists that they idolize are just humans at the end of the day and also have feelings (not to sound harsh). This similar theme is also seen in his other song Cheerleader that he released just over a month ago.?
He also announced the release date for his upcoming album "SMILE :D" scheduled to drop on July 26th, 2024.
I think that this song is a direct letter to the singer as she self-deprecates by calling herself a Crybaby, stating that she is the problem, and that her life is endless misery. Another woman's voice pops in at the end of the song repeating “Crybaby” over and over again over the sounds of various high-hats and mellow 80’s inspired synths. The Cults are always able to portray a certain level of emotion through their music and I think this song was no exception.
