New Monday, Blue Monday, Brew Monday!

The first day after the weekend for most is always a hard one, but apparently today is the hardest day of the year - “Blue Monday”.?

“Blue Monday” is a term that was first coined in 2005 by British psychologist Dr. Cliff Arnall, to describe the most depressing day of the year. It is always the third Monday of January and considers a variety of factors, including weather conditions, debt levels, the time since Christmas, and the failure of New Year’s resolutions, all of which seem to contribute to feelings of depression and low mood.

However, the day is widely criticised by experts for being unscientific and there is no evidence to back the claim up that this day is more depressing than any other day of the year.

I for one, prefer the idea of “Brew Monday” which happens to fall on the same day and is a campaign started by Samaritans. The concept always takes place on the same day as Blue Monday and encourages people to get together with friends, family, or colleagues over a cup of tea and have a conversation about their mental health and well-being.

The idea of creating a sense of community and belonging and break down the stigma surrounding mental health issues really resonates with me. By taking the time to talk and listen to one another, individuals can feel less alone and more supported, which can help to improve their mental well – being.

Many companies and organisations promote a positive mental health culture on this day by organising events and encouraging employees to take a break and have a cuppa. Hat’s off to Molton Brown & Kao Corporation who have closed their offices, production sites and stores for a companywide Mental Health Day today. Well played!
