New Mayor for Woorabinda
New Mayor - Councillor Josh Weazel

New Mayor for Woorabinda

On Wednesday I was in Woorabinda for a Government Champion visit. This was my first opportunity to visit the community following local government elections and easing of COVID-19 bio-security restrictions.

It was a pleasure to meet the new Mayor – Councillor Josh Weazel – and his team of councillors. I was impressed by the Mayor’s vision and his principles and plans for success, particularly his engagement plan which will give Woorabinda a strong voice on issues of concern.

It was a privilege to be joined by Dr Chris Sarra, Director-General, Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, for this visit. Councillor Weazel has high expectations of the relationship between the community and government and it was refreshing to hear his honest views about how the two can work together to ensure the best outcomes for Woorabinda.

Councillor Weazel is keen to build sustainable employment and develop industry for the community. On Wednesday, the council had arranged a demonstration by BCF Concreting, which could lead to opportunities for local employment and further regional prospects. In this photo, Councillor Weazel is pictured with BCF’s mobile concrete batching plant before it pours concrete that will create a sealed entrance to Woorabinda State School. Importantly, the new entrance will enable wheelchair access.

As Government Champion for Woorabinda, I stand ready to support Councillor Weazel and the community. I’m proud to be on this journey with them to achieve their vision, and I look forward to a strong working relationship going forward.
