Your Hack

This week your hack is to?give yourself?time?to learn.

Harvard Business School professor Linda A. Hill says becoming a manager means coming to terms with the difference between the myth of management and reality.

And part of that reality is understanding becoming a great manager doesn't happen overnight.

Here are four strategies to understand the realities of management.

  • Let go of the formal authority: New managers soon learn that formal authority is a very "limited source of power." Management is more about negotiating interdependencies.
  • Learn from others' paths: When meeting someone who manages people well, find an opportunity to ask them how they learned, and what they read.?Here is my personal favourite reading list for managers.
  • Focus on people management skills: New managers feel out of their comfort zone in terms of their people skills—it’s normal. Leading others can be stressful, especially because like individuals, organizations are not perfect.
  • Redefine your satisfaction: Managers are far removed from the outcome of products, often feeling jealous of their employee's successes. This is a major flaw. New managers must learn new ways of defining success, like seeing other people succeed and helping others grow.
