New-look E-waste policy in the making??
The NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) have been interacting with multiple stakeholders towards revamping the electronic waste policy. The whole idea is to adopt a circular economy approach and focus on the complete lifecycle management of products, the revised policy could allow companies to consider the total volume of electronic products recycled rather than only the amount of metal and rare earth mineral extractions. E-waste, generated from discarded electronic items, is rich in rare earth minerals and metals including #gold, #silver, #copper and #aluminium
The new policy will also seek to address sticky issues concerning waste collection and producer's responsibilities, besides offering attractive incentives to the industry. Estimates put e-waste growth in India at 10% annually, with significant recycling of e-waste happening in the non-formal sector which still employs outdated and hazardous methods. The government initiative is laudable given the seriousness of the challenge at hand.?
