New Literacies in the Digital Era
THE CIVICS Innovation Hub
Our mission is to strengthen the democratic competence, self-efficacy, and resilience of citizens across Europe.
What role do we, as civic educators, play in the rapidly changing technological environment, riddled with misinformation, disinformation, deep fakes, and data privacy concerns? How do we enable citizens to skillfully navigate and understand the complexities of digitisation, artificial intelligence, algorithms, and emerging technologies that influence our daily lives??
With this in mind, we approach the autumn and deliberate on how to best equip the NECE community with the tools and resources necessary to tackle the new technological challenges ahead of us. Check out our latest blog post on this topic and feel welcome to send us your suggestions and ideas related to digital and media literacy that you believe we should by all means share with the NECE community!

The Anticipating and Counteracting Disruptions of Democracy Lab, took place at the European Forum Alpbach, bringing together experts from various fields to discuss and brainstorm on how migration will shape the future of civic education across Europe. We used the foresight methodology as applied and presented by Wojciech Przybylski and our partner and co-organiser of the event, Visegrad Insight.?
Participants brainstormed potential events impacting civic education, from the criminalisation of civic engagement to climate crises. The second day of the Lab saw the development of plausible scenarios related to migration and civic education, prompting creative thinking on both positive and negative outcomes. On the final day, the focus shifted to devising solutions, with participants assessing potential impacts and generating actionable responses at different levels.?
The Lab concluded with reflections on the foresight process and strategies for applying it to civic education.
