Security Industry Authority New licence-linked qualifications
Do you currently work in the security industry? Perhaps in manned guarding, door supervision, security guard or store security? Or any of the many other positions within the Security Industry?
If you do then we have some breaking news for you! It has been decided that all licence holders will have to complete a certain level of Compliance Training either before your licence renewal or prior to applying for a new licence.
As a Business Owner a key area of interest to me is First Aid! Being a licence holder and having worked in hostile environments I fully appreciate the importance of being trained, having the correct skills, and knowing how to save a person’s life.
First Aid training, gives everyone the opportunity to gain some vital skills, specially if the course is delivered at the right level. Did you know that Knife crime is at an all time high within England & Wales. Knife Crime Report
Offences recorded as homicide by apparent method of killing, with a sharp instrument, was 135 per 100,000 in 1977 versus 285 in 2017/18. Due to this rise in Knife crime, city pubs and clubs in some areas of the UK, specially the city of London have issued “bleed control” kits.
This extract is from the Police Professional “In the 12 months to June 2019, there was a record high of 44,000 knife crimes in England and Wales. NHS England figures show hospital admissions for all injuries caused by an assault with a knife or sharp object have gone up by almost a third since 2013, to 4,986 last year”.
In 2017 Lynne Baird, lost her son who was only 26-year-old. Daniel was fatally stabbed in a pub in Digbeth, Birmingham. The Daniel Baird Foundation If we had an increase of vital life saving equipment in every public house and key strategic points within our cities, it could save many lives. As well as having these kits, all security industry professionals should be trained in using them correctly.
In my professional opinion the industries move to ensure everyone undertakes a certain level of training in addition to their SIA licence is a positive one. However, I do question why, they have not included mental health awareness training as part of this new initiative.
In society today, mental health issues are on the increase. In my professional experience it is not uncommon for those working within the Security Industry to come across mental health issues daily. Working as a member of store security, one of the biggest issues is shop lifting. A high percentage of people who shop lift suffer from mental ill health. This could be due to a number factors including homelessness, drug or alcohol addiction. Being more aware of mental ill health and how to engage with someone who suffers from mental ill health can make a huge difference. By understanding how to speak with someone, who is suffering, understanding more about their potential condition, you could de-escalate a situation much more effectively and at the same time help that person in more ways than you know.
As an experienced and established Training Provider we have decided to offer Catastrophic Bleed Control training as part of our Emergency First Aid at Work and First Aid at Work courses. This will be included as a standard to any company who is a provider of security trained staff. It may be that you are a publican or a holder of a “public access bleed control” who would like their staff trained in this area. We are also going to include our excellent mental health courses as part of the package. It will be of benefit to all if everyone working in the Security Industry has an excellent understanding of First Aid & Mental health. It will also bring added value to you as a security professional and to any company offering their services to any existing or potential client.
