New Leader On The Block
Today I would like to share my views on what is expected from a new team leader and what should be their priorities and first accomplishments on the task list.
Generally new leaders rush to start achieving the required goals and in doing so, they skip the fundamental basics of team building.?Due to this behavior, people on the team tend to form quick perceptions and these opinions usually last and are difficult to change.?Here, a problem arises which is if a leader does not take the time to understand the needs and synergy of the team; problems will always surface.
Number one priority as a New Leader is to get to know your team members and their needs to guide and assist them on their individual journeys to reach their full potential, and most importantly to create harmony among the team.
As a new leader, it is crucial to show what you stand for. Communicate your vision clearly and demonstrate transparency in your relationships.?This will create positive momentum and build trust among team members.
Set ambitious yet achievable goals with the team and monitor success on monthly basis together. By doing so, you and the team will be able to re-evaluate the goals, overcome challenges and align the roles and strategies to best achieve your mutual goals.?Your mission is to be a facilitator bringing the team together and not an order giver.
A new leader should get used to open door policy and always be willing to lend an ear to their teams. ?It’s a policy where the leader of an organization leaves their office doors open for all employees to come in and share their workplace concerns or needs.?In other words, a New leader needs to be accessible.
Being able to identify and solve a business challenge has a quick and dramatic impact on you as a New leader.?Taking swift actions demonstrates to the team that you are listening, analysing their concerns and treating them as priority.
By taking action swiftly, you will further motivate the team to give more and build trust quickly.
Here are a few principles and ethics to remember as a new leader:
