In the conventional sense, we've been always told that our work should speak for ourselves, we shouldn't.. Bhagavad Gita’s crux says this too, in another way –Karmanye Vadhikaraste Ma phaleshou kada chana”, which means, “Perform your duties without expecting for a reward”. However, with the changing times, we need to tweak our old lessons a bit to suit the changing demands of our current times.
During the present times, we need to extract a better word-of-mouth for our work (the work has to be good in the first place) because that may influence others to also consider us for the work, then so be it. We ordered a pizza during the weekend, the delivery was on time, and the delivery guy requested me to do something. I booked a cab from the airport back to my home, the ride was smooth, the cab driver asked me to heed to his request. I booked a beautician for home service, she did her job well, and asked me to do something. We went to a doctor recently. After the consultation, I got a text message from an online brand that aggregates doctors. It asked me to do something!
You may have guessed, what the ask/ the pleading was for in all the above occasions. Each service provider had asked me to leave a positive review online – on Zomato, Uber, UrbanClap and Practo respectively. I’m sure a LOT of people may ignore such pointed requests, but the more they ask, the more is the probability of people leaving a good review. And these reviews help! We end up making our decisions from these reviews left by strangers. Thus, the people who do ask customers/clients to leave a good review on a specific platform that matters to them are smarter than the rest. They have thought-through the value of such reviews and are making a proactive effort.
Since we live in a highly complex and attention-starved world, we need to make sure that we do our personal branding right. The days of quiet and selfless work seem to have taken a back seat. However, it does not imply that the world is besieged with selfishness, all I mean to say is that we need to make our work and effort count to be acknowledged. What we definitely need now, even to rise in our corporate careers is to work diligently and in a right fashion in the first place and to speak up for your work and ask for your dues, for if you don't, someone else shall take your sweet spot. As they say, you need to ASK it, BELIEVE it to ACHIEVE it from the universe.
(Action is of prime importance but we individuals don't have a PR agency to do the talking, be one for yourself)
