Rural communities face unique challenges in communicating about overdose prevention. It can be difficult to tailor messages to specific audiences when, in many rural communities, one person or group may play many roles, or?to identify and train trusted messengers who can provide a local perspective.?Tune in on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, from 11:30am-12:30pm PT, to explore overdose prevention communications strategies for rural stakeholders. Ensuring Better Health Protections for California Renters in Multi-Unit Housing
Living in substandard housing conditions can result in serious health issues. In California, renters are 2.6 times more likely to have?mold and 2.5 times more likely to have cockroaches?than?homeowners. Communities of color are also more likely to be renters: throughout the state, 62.9% of African Americans and 55.5% of Latinxs rent their homes, compared to just 44.7% of white people. In 2023, PHI’s Regional Asthma Management and Prevention program worked with tenants’ rights groups, community advocates and elected officials to?pass AB 548, making it easier to discover and correct severe health and safety problems in multi-unit housing. Thanks to their efforts, California's?6.8 million?renters living in multi-unit rental housing now have?better protections from substandard housing and health threats like mold, cold and pests. Expanding Access to Advanced Illness Care in California’s Communities of Color
PHI’s AC CARE Alliance?is a faith-based, person-centered, lay care navigation intervention that is improving?care for people with advanced illness in California. The program first launched to serve predominantly African American adults with advanced illness and their caregivers. Last year, the AC CARE Alliance expanded their services and supports for the Latinx community—forging new partnerships with churches and community groups, and developing bilingual trainings and resources in English and Spanish?on end-of-life care, palliative care, advance care planning and more.
