Ensuring Better Health Protections for California Renters in Multi-Unit Housing

Living in substandard housing conditions can result in serious health issues. In California, renters are 2.6 times more likely to have?mold and 2.5 times more likely to have cockroaches?than?homeowners. Communities of color are also more likely to be renters: throughout the state, 62.9% of African Americans and 55.5% of Latinxs rent their homes, compared to just 44.7% of white people. In 2023, PHI’s Regional Asthma Management and Prevention program worked with tenants’ rights groups, community advocates and elected officials to?pass AB 548, making it easier to discover and correct severe health and safety problems in multi-unit housing. Thanks to their efforts, California's?6.8 million?renters living in multi-unit rental housing now have?better protections from substandard housing and health threats like mold, cold and pests.
