New Job Culture Fit

How do I know it’s a match?

Although it’s important, your salary isn’t the only factor that determines a good fit in a role. It’s up to you to decide what factors are most important, and what will make you the happiest.

Wherever you are in the job search process (beginning, middle, or nearing a decision) consider taking a step back to clearly define your non-negotiables and your negotiables. Below, we’ve listed some of the most important factors for many job-seekers.

Job Priorities

  1. Company size (startup or established)
  2. Hustle or work-life balance style
  3. Work location flexibility (work-from-home, hybrid, fully in-person)*
  4. Hour flexibility
  5. Work style (collaborative, independent)
  6. Office environment (separate, communal)
  7. Benefits and Amenities (be careful with this one!*)

Andrea Teichner from Accelerate HC takes us through work-at-home options in this clip.

What is the ideal corporate culture for you?

Consider the exercise of clearly ranking the above priorities in order of importance. It’s always a good idea to check in with yourself to keep your non-negotiables at top-of-mind, and to see where you might be more flexible, especially once you start approaching a decision. If company A satisfies all of your non-negotiables, but company B has an amazing office, it’s easy to fumble your goals in the heat of the moment.

Keep in mind that you may have to be flexible when the time comes down to it (very few positions check every box!), but that doesn’t mean that you can’t select an opportunity that satisfies at least some of your preferences.

And remember, just because you may receive an offer with an appealing salary, don’t discount the importance of the culture fit criteria above. A nice salary is great, but if you hate the work, how long will you really be there?

*Why the cautionary note here? Companies love the cost-benefit ratio of “amenities.” A nice break room, free coffee & breakfast, off-site events are all enriching. But they are often a lower cost alternative than paying a higher salary to the employees. Make sure it is not the amazing gym membership that sways you – after all, with that additional money, you can get any gym membership!

Take some time, write down what is a Must and what is a Nice to Have when evaluating opportunities and let that help guide your decisions.
