New Jersey state officials have formally approved plans for Netflix to turn the former Fort Monmouth Army base into a state-of-the-art production facility. The streaming giant will invest about $848 million in the redevelopment project, with construction to be completed in two phases over several years. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said the “transformative investment will serve as a cornerstone in our efforts to create a thriving industry from whole cloth."??
The outpost five miles from the Jersey Shore will generate “an entirely new ecosystem,” consisting of industry work, housing, hotels and ancillary businesses and services, Murphy added.?
Said Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, “We believe a Netflix studio can boost the local and state economy with thousands of new jobs and billions in economic output.”?

Looking back to the aughts, the fact that?anyone?was defending broadcast TV seems positively quaint these days. Those types of champions are now few and far between, especially since a number of veteran broadcast executives were handed their walking papers this year. Not only does it seem like a fait accompli that broadcast TV is dead, no one seems to be the least bit sad about it — unless you’re a fan of, say,?Days of Our Lives?and?Dancing With the Stars. Otherwise, the current M.O. is to continue moving resources away from broadcast TV. Said one veteran broadcast exec, “As networks have become just another part of a larger corporations, there are fewer people who give a damn.”?

After protracted negotiations with multiple bidders, including tech giants Amazon and Apple, the NFL and Google have finalized a deal to put the Sunday Ticket package on YouTube. The buffet of out-of-market games – which, since 1994, has liberated its subscribers from the requirement that only local-market teams appear on broadcast airwaves – will stream via YouTube TV or as a standalone option in YouTube’s channel store. Pricing has not been confirmed, nor have the financials of the deal, but current (and longtime) rightsholder DirecTV is understood to currently be paying $1.5 billion a year for Sunday Ticket.?
