New interim director's work highlighted in Cancer Moonshot progress report

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is a premier National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
In addition to being announced as UPMC Hillman Cancer Center’s new interim director yesterday, Kathryn Schmitz was pleased to have her Moving Through Cancer program and efforts included in the progress the White House reported on the Cancer Moonshot.?
“To ensure equitable access to supportive care, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Moving Through Cancer Initiative mapped exercise oncology program availability in the U.S. and identified disparities by race/ethnicity, SES, and geography.?ACSM, American Cancer Society, and American Society of Clinical Oncology published clinical guidelines recommending exercise to improve symptoms and treatment outcomes for people living with cancer. To further address symptoms of underserved people living with cancer, Moving Through Cancer is developing a toolkit and course to integrate exercise programming that will be available in 2026 through the University of Pittsburgh Center for Teaching and Learning.”
Dr. Schmitz is the founding director of the UPMC Moving Through Cancer Program. She is an international thought leader in the field of exercise oncology and has won numerous awards, including being the first oncology researcher to receive the President’s Council on Fitness Lifetime Achievement Award.
