New Insights | Wireless Network Testing

In this newsletter, we will discuss topics such as verifying the network coverage and performance of unmodified 3GPP over a satellite connection, testing with Samsung's latest flagship terminal, Galaxy S24, Keysight's Nemo tools used in a Germany-wide mobile network benchmarking campaign, and the highlights of our latest Nemo product releases.

Verify the Network Coverage and Performance of Unmodified 3GPP over a Satellite Connection

Did you know that you can use our trusted air interface measurement tools, Nemo Handy and Nemo Outdoor , not only for drive testing but also to verify the network coverage and performance of unmodified 3GPP over a satellite connection? The solution enables testing systems that utilize LTE technology for satellite connection and terrestrial network. Several commercial trials for this kind of systems are currently ongoing globally.

Nemo Handy and Nemo Outdoor with test terminals or scanning receivers can be used to test the network performance for example for coverage metrics such as RSRP, application testing including latency and throughput, voice services, and handovers between the satellite connection and the terrestrial network.

Nemo Handy and Nemo Outdoor Support Samsung Galaxy S24

Our field measurement tools Nemo Handy and Nemo Outdoor have proven test capability with a wide variety of Samsung Galaxy S24 5G flagship device variants, featuring both Exynos 2400 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipsets. You can use commercial off-the-shelf smartphones with Nemo Outdoor and thanks to Nemo Diagnostic Module (NDM), also with Nemo Handy, and take advantage of the full measurement functionalities of these tools, immediately. Pending device availability in different regions.

Cell Locator Feature in Nemo Outdoor

Latest Product Release Highlights: New Cell Locator Feature to Estimate Physical Locations of Base Stations and more

We continually aim to ensure that our customers can test with the latest technologies and devices, and work continuously to introduce new features to enhance testing efficiency.

Our top three picks from our latest Nemo Outdoor releases:

  • A new cell locator feature that estimates the physical locations of base stations in real time during drive tests. Positioning is based on UE or scanner measurements, there is no need to use directional antennas. The feature locates GSM, UMTS, LTE, and 5G base stations. Accuracy is best when the drive test route passes the base station from two or more sides. Cell locator also enables locating cells for previously recorded measurements.
  • Test with Qualcomm X35 5G NR RedCap, Qualcomm X75, and Samsung Exynos 5153 modem-based devices.
  • Test the real application quality of experience (QoE) for X and Instagram, among several other mobile applications, with Keysight’s Application Testing Automation (ATA) method.

Our highlights from the latest Nemo Handy and Nemo Walker Air releases:

  • We continue to work to ensure our customers can test with the very latest devices and technologies, with seamlessly integrated support for Qualcomm′s advanced X75 chipset.

Our highlights of the latest Nemo Analyze release:

  • Parallel file loading functionality to speed up the process of loading files into the database.
  • Root cause analysis for audio quality MOS. The analysis takes into account both the sending and receiving end of the audio connection and provides the root cause, along with certain metrics pointing to the possible problem.

Keysight’s Nemo Tools Used in Germany-wide Mobile Network Benchmarking Campaign

For the second time, IMTEST, the largest consumer test magazine in Germany, in cooperation with zafaco GmbH, a technological and market leader for broadband network testing in Germany, and supported by Keysight Technologies, has published results for a major drive test campaign through Germany.

The scope of the testing was to find Germany's best mobile network by benchmarking the three major mobile operators – Telekom, Vodafone, and Telefónica (O2). The main outcome of the tests this year was that the overall results for all of the tested operators were good and the network coverage in Germany is getting better with less and less areas where mobile connections do not work.

Keysight's unique Application Testing Automation (ATA) method enables testing the real quality of experience (QoE) of OTT applications. The ATA method is available in Keysight's field testing and benchmarking solutions, including Nemo Outdoor , Nemo Backpack Pro , and Nemo Network Benchmarking Solution (NBM) .
