People in Cardiff suffer from more work-related stress than those anywhere else in the UK, according to a survey of 3,000 employees by staff benefits company Perkbox. Wolverhampton came in second place, followed by London. The research found finance workers were the most likely to experience stress, with government and health workers also scoring highly. It also found long working hours were the biggest stressor, followed by office politics and client relationships.
A Carillion finance executive was just six weeks into the job when she blew the whistle on irregular accounting practices at the construction firm, minutes tabled to a parliamentary inquiry show. The Guardian reports Emma Mercer had posed questions to the chief executive, Richard Howson, and the finance director, Zafar Khan, in May 2017, but was dissatisfied with the response. The company collapsed six months later, billions in debt and with just £29m in assets, leaving a long list of creditors and a pension shortfall. Committee chair Frank Field said: “Emma Mercer took just six weeks to spot and pull the thread that began the entire company unravelling.”
Comcast has made a bid to take over Sky, challenging the offer made by Rupert Murdoch. The American cable giant said its bid for Sky is 16% higher than the offer from Murdoch-owned 21st Century Fox, which already owns 39% of Sky. Murdoch made his offer in December 2016, but UK authorities put a damper on it earlier this year, with the Competition and Markets Authority saying the deal would give the Murdoch family too much control over the UK news media.
An English businessman is suing Google in a bid to remove links to his criminal history, which he claims have left him treated like a “pariah”. The unnamed man, The Times reports (paywall), was convicted on a charge of “conspiracy to account falsely” in the 1990s. Newspaper articles remain online referencing the crime and the businessman, who was awarded anonymity for this suit, said he was “unable to form any new friendships or personal relationships”. Google defended its right to retain information it said was in the public interest. It is the first “right to be forgotten” case to be heard in the UK.
Frankfurt, Madrid and Dublin are set to benefit from the relocation of financial staff ahead of Brexit. Credit Suisse, which employs 5,500 people in London, is looking to move about 250 UK staffers to Frankfurt and Madrid. Scotland-headquartered Standard Life Aberdeen, the UK’s largest listed fund house, is setting up an investment and distribution hub in Dublin that will support its Luxembourg operations. Barclays and Bank of America have already confirmed their plans to establish their EU headquarters in Dublin. Management consulting firm Oliver Wyman estimates that 3,000 to 35,000 jobs in the UK could be at risk due to Brexit.
Idea of the Day: Stress can be a good thing – it keeps you on your toes and encourages creative thinking, says best-selling author Bernard Marr. But when stress starts to build up, it’s important to manage it before it becomes detrimental.
“Try identifying and then taking one positive action. It might be making a list of tasks that you can prioritise, asking for more resources, or even just finding the humour in the situation.”

6 年I would contend that a whistleblower should be offered the option of public anonymity. It shouldn't make a difference but I suspect that many recruiters will be put off hiring her now...
