New Hampshire reaches deal to purchase future Rail Trail property.
The New Hampton Department of Transportation and the Boston & Maine Railway have reached an agreement for the State to purchase a 9.6 mile corridor of land, which was previously used by the Boston & Maine rail line. This section of the corridor runs from the center of Hampton, north to Portsmouth, and will complete the State's ownership of the corridor along the entire NH seacoast.
The State's Executive Council will vote to approve the agreement on Wednesday, and in doing so, will provide the green light to finalize the sale, and begin the planning process to construct a rail trail along the Seacoast. The initial focus will be on the section of land (Hampton to Portsmouth) now under contract, with construction beginning within the next 1-2 years. Many details are still to be finalized, but it is expected that the trail will consist of a 10-ft wide stone dust trail to be used by non-motorized vehicles (a.k.a. bicycles, etc.) and pedestrians.
The State and Boston & Maine have been in negotiations for several years on this transaction, and this recent development is a big step forward in creating a rail trail through New Hampshire's coastal towns. More details will follow in the weeks to come.

5 年I grew up along the B&M and rode my horse on it all the time, I hope this rail trail will be open to all users, not just hikers and bikes. Equestrians need safe places to ride. I know from the tresses in Hampton to up through North Hampton is a great stretch to ride. Help equestrians get off the roads, support them on the Rail Trails of NH
