New Hampshire Making Progress in Attracting and Retaining Young People

It was reported this morning, that the state is making inroads with respect to attracting and retaining young people. Read article here. This is positive news, and the Governor's office, and other advocacy groups such as Stay Work Play should feel good about this recent progress. Congrats to all of those who helped make this happen.

As encouraging as these latest figures are, we should continue to be diligent in focusing on this issue, as young people are, and will be, the future of our state. While a modest new "net migration" of young adults is a positive sign, we should not be content with these figures. As reported by our state advocacy group, 603 and Me in July, New Hampshire has the fastest aging workforce in the country, and now has the 2nd-oldest population in the nation, second to only Maine. Moreover, 77% of net new jobs in the Granite State that have been secured between 2010 and 2017, have been done so by those who are 55 and older.

New Hampshire has to continue to focus on ways to attract both employers, and employees to the state. With Vermont offering $10,000 to families to move to their state, and Mass being more competitive with non-compete agreements, the New Hampshire legislature must focus on that which keeps NH competitive with those states around us, and who are also trying to attract young people to help propel their own economies.

I would be interested in seeing the data by race/ethnicity - A bit more diversity would make NH more welcoming to many families.

The further inland you move the more affordable it is. Some wonderful communities west of Portsmouth.

Follow Maine's footsteps and pay off student loans. Many more people will come to NH. Even if NH gives half as much that Maine does, NH will get more people to move here.
