New Goal for MP, Net Zero Health Care and Health Services Carbon Emissions

The saving environment is not just a day's job. It is integral to our daily life. The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan started the campaign on February 19, 2021; I was the witness of event?'?? ?????? ? ??' when CM said that he had decided to plant one sapling every day on the occasion of Narmada Jayanti in Amarkantak, by planting Rudraksha and Sal trees. In keeping with the spirit of World Environment Day, our beloved Mama ji launched a major plantation campaign 'Ankur' with public participation. The drive aims at greater absorption of carbon dioxide by trees and release of oxygen in the atmosphere by green lungs. The aim contributes to the pledge taken by India during UNFCCC CoP-26 to achieve “net-zero carbon emission by 2070” and enhance climate commitments the “Panchamrit”.

Suffering from global warming, frequent floods and fires, Covid-19 pandemic and numerous other problems, the planet is going through an existential crisis, citing an urgent need for scientific and innovative steps to secure humanity's future. India’s announcement of its net-zero goal is a major step considering the fact that it is not one of the major contributors to global warming. Its historical cumulative emissions are a mere 4.37% of the world’s total. Now, to achieve its targets of 2070, India particularly needs to focus on a smoother renewable energy transition, greater adoption of electric vehicles and greater participation from the public as well as the private sector. But there are lots of lefts which are directly related to the public and their health. I would like to take the attention of everyone.

We haven’t set our target toward Health Care and Health Service out of its ambition to become “net zero” for its direct emissions by?2070. A Lancet’s Countdown report on Climate Change highlighted the impact of the healthcare sector on global emissions. The report indicates that the total emissions footprint of the global health sector is 5.2%, whether Indian health sector’s contribution to the country’s total emissions is approximately 2%. While this may seem like a small, the fact that it continues to increase at a rate of approximately 5% every year is a cause for concern. Given that India has committed to a net-zero target by 2070, and international health systems like the UK’s NHS and the US’ Department of Health and Human Services department giving clear reduction and net zero targets, the need for concerted action on decarbonization by the Indian healthcare sector has become an imperative. The state of Madhya Pradesh is very concerned about Public Health and sustainability. Madhya Pradesh is progressing in the field of healthcare and its related services. It’s a law of nature which affect in a level adversely to the environment when we introduce some new methods which are not pre-existing.

Healthcare emissions in the state are increasing at highly intensive rates, moreover two digits megatons of carbon dioxide equivalent of which came from the supply chain, direct delivery of care, staff commute and patient and visitor travel, and private health and care services commissioned by the Govt. Both the acute and primary care sectors are the largest contributors to this carbon footprint. There is an urgent need for new insights into how the MP Health services can achieve such significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions. I’m working on interdisciplinary research that seek to develop innovative frameworks and models designed to support this sustainability transition in the healthcare sector, for example, through re-designed clinical pathways, optimised services, as well as new forms of organisation and governance. Also, we aim to identify innovative approaches for models of preventative care as well as the management of medicines and their supply chains, transport, travel, healthcare estate, infrastructure, and other assets.

There is ample research work available to recognise the critical interlinkages, including tensions and co-benefits, between climate action (SDG13), good health and wellbeing (SDG3), sustainable cities and communities (SDG11), as well as industry, innovation, and infrastructure (SDG9), responsible consumption and production (SDG12) affecting the development of sustainable solutions for healthy people and the planet. Some research work should focus on distinguishing between direct interventions and enabling actions, identifying innovative practices both for health care practitioners and managers that enable GHG emissions reductions while at the same time helping to deliver equal if not better health care outcomes. Future research should also consider other constraints such as access to finance and human resources, as well as broader considerations including health and social inequalities, patient expectations, education, digitalisation, sustainable cities, and communities, as well as sustainable production and consumption to be taken into account.

My primary research focus of the project is the MP but would aim to generate insights for national/ global applications as well. Beyond contributing to the interconnected UN SDGs, the research seeks to produce and evaluate specific interventions designed to support the sustainability transition in the healthcare sector. I’m thinking the key outcomes of this project could therefore be new methodologies and frameworks that are based on both academic rigour and practical relevance in the field of healthcare services.

We are looking for such good news in the health services as well, Today highlights:?“High Tourist Footfall Will Help Sanchi Become India's First Zero Carbon City, Says Top MP Official (outlook business, Monday, Feb 13, 2023)”.
