New Gems from the ITN Archive

?Starting this week with a very rare find - on heels of Japan’s most recent earthquake we’ve found and uploaded a completely new Dateline from the small town of Matsushiro on Japan’s west coast, covering the means of a small rural town to prepare for such events. A really charming report from a highly remote area in 1966 and just 2 years ahead of the next major quake to hit the region - this a fantastic and rare find from the ITN Archive – now catalogued to perfection and uploaded to Getty!

?And a very timely selection of material from our US Bureau Project prepared this week by our own @Stockdale, Olivia – we’ve uploaded additional footage from the Clinton 1992 campaign and previously unseen rushes from the Lewinsky affair – including some of our earliest Clinton x Clinton footage! From Hilary being forced to squash rumours in 1992 (the exact moment shown above actually…) up to the point of impeachment, a seriously impressive set uploads this week – with a fun treat in there for us all, a marching band rendition of (comedic pause) the Turtles ‘Happy Together’…. ? Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba

Sir John recounts a not-so professional moment, 1964.

?…And one for the high-brows, an extensive Dateline IV with legendary Tate Director Sir John Rothenstein upon exit from what remains the longest directorship the Tate has ever seen – 27 years. Credited for ‘dragging the British art world screaming and kicking into the twentieth century’, Rothenstein lead the gallery through a golden period in the early 60s, erecting the Turner Galleries (still open) and helping popularise Matisse, Picasso and Francis Bacon amongst others across the UK.? My favourite anecdote from the whole interview, however, remains Rothenstein’s overt struggles with criticism, the culmination of which would be punching art critic Douglas Cooper onsite in 1954! True to ITN / Reggie Bosanquet form, the awkward event would be covered in this lovely 7-minute Dateline interview – the Tate will turn 127 this July!

Kermit gears up for the Oxford Union

?…And something more light-hearted, maybe.. (his character assassination is brutal). We’ve recatalogued a series of news reports covering one of the best addresses the Oxford Union has ever seen – seriously check the ratings; Kermit in 1993! Discussing his own class struggles and drawing inspiration from Reagan’s pivot from actor to president – Kermit cited England’s love affair with scandals and more in an address that burned down the house – notably attracting more attendees than Reagan himself!

French and Saunders being French and Saunders, 1993.

?…And we’ve recently uploaded our first ever French and Saunders interview (1993)! Discussing their play debut ‘Me and Mammie O’Rourke’ the pair covered the price of fame, who wears the pants and open-mouth kissing – it’s a joy and it’s now on Getty??

Upcoming anniversaries

Going back to my roots with a car-journey superstar – the Angel of the North turns 26 next month! From controversial beginnings to established queen, it’s been a ride – and we’ve uploaded a series of reports covering her controversial unveiling – if nothing else these reports also prove ITN’s penchant for comedy – simply impeccable.

In the news

…And speaking of established queens we’ve recently had a selection of early film digitised on the Queen of Denmark ahead of the abdication ceremony this Sunday – incredible footage of Margrethe, as a young princess alongside Elizabeth II and Philip between 1957-1959 - with thanks to our friends at Cinelab for a cracking job as per!

?…And new year = new talent, we’ve got footage of budding sports personnel to offer the site this week, covering the best British darts and tennis has to offer - Luke Littler and Jack Draper, with special thanks to @Parmiter, Tom and @Rockliffe, Max for the flag / leg work!

Glynis Johns above and Derek Draper below.

?…And unfortunately, several high profile deaths from this last week to flag, from Glynis Johns to JPR Williams, Derek Draper to David Soul and Franz Beckenbauer – significant losses from the acting, sporting and political spheres – all of which have been covered for archive, with several fresh uploads this week, including footage of Draper as a student protester from 1988 and David Soul behind-the-scenes with Paul Michael Glaser and Trevor MacDonald at the NTAs! Major thanks to @Botwright, Stasia for her quick work on these!

?…And we’ve recently uploaded a series of rushes and reports on the legendary Sven-G?ran Eriksson on the heels of a tragic announcement regarding the former England manager’s health. @Rockliffe, Max and @Parmiter, Tom have speedily catalogued and uploaded a ton of footage from Eriksson’s heyday proving unquestionably, alongside statements given by Sven this week, that Eriksson’s positivity and outlook are unshakable.

Danny Boyle gets theatrical on Westminster Bridge, 2002.

?..And in other news, Danny Boyle will be returning for a ’28 Days Later’ sequel – to mark the occasion of this we’ve uploaded this fresh report in which our own? @Phillips, Ronke had Danny running around London, recreating scenes from the film (interview included with a small jibe at Ken Livingston’s expense) – apparently clearing London includes a combination of begging and invoking the star power of Leonardo DiCaprio…
