New Gems from the ITN Archive
Kicking things off this week with a long-awaited horror digitisation – rushes from the London premiere of ‘Scream’ (1997). Courteney Cox and Drew Barrymore were bringing two very different energies to red carpet for this event - Cox was bored of asked about her hit sitcom; ‘Friends’ while Barrymore was enjoying the next leg of her career, as a highly bankable star on image-repair duty after the early 90s. As per the whacky nature of UK 90s premieres (seriously, search for the premieres that took George Clooney + to Birmingham…) a hoard of mismatched celebs attended, and we’ve now uploaded one of just two clips we have of Horror legend Wes Craven!
…And our South Africa project is back after a brief but timely break as the country’s ties to Russia continue to unravel across the current news cycle. As such, this week’s highlight is newly discovered rushes of sitting President Cyril Ramaphosa, in 1992. Ramaphosa began his career as an effective trade unionist for South African mineworkers before rising the ranks of the ANC to cripple the Apartheid State as part of a “troika” with Chris Hani and Jay Naidoo, who collectively brought the Labour force in SA to a standstill across the early 90s. By 1992 he’d help kickstart Mandela’s “secret” negotiations for the end of Apartheid by beginning his own with NP rep Rolph Meyer, securing his path towards the presidency – if not for Thabo Mbeki (second SA President)! The above is a freshly digitised speech from the day of the Boipatong Massacre funerals, 30 years ago this month!
…And (just like that)? – no, this isn’t Kim Cattrall filming for the new SATC season 2 spin off, rather footage of the Liverpudlian actress during her West End Debut in Brian Clark's revived play ‘Whose Life Is It Anyway?’ (2005), the rushes of which we’ve just uploaded to Getty. Reviews for the play were moderate, though Cattrall couldn’t quite escape the comparisons to her titan of a 90s-character Samantha Jones, despite Cattrall viewing theatre as an escapism from Miss Jones
And for anyone that’s seen the Apple Vision Pro advertised this week, you may* find some solace in our recent nostalgic uploads – retro mobile phone GVs from Central London, 2002! Simpler times for a calmer mind!

On this week in History
11th June 1969: Israel’s 4th Prime Minister Golda Meir visited Harold Wilson at Number 10 for talks on the Middle East crisis
6th of June 1985 – In order to pacify Parisians during a hotly contested debate on the nature of the Louvre’s new design, a rope mock-up was erected, which apparently only confused and incensed the people more!
?12th June 2007: The audience vs the act, in June 2007 the White Stripes took their promotion of upcoming Album ‘Icky Thump’ to an unlikely place, the Royal Chelsea Hospital. Chelsea pensioners were treated to some of the softer sounds from “brother and sister” duo Jack and Meg White, much to the delight (real joy) of the pensioners who were, as one put it, “happy to have music that wasn’t Christmas carolers”…
