New Gems from the ITN Archive
POV, it’s 2002 and Steven Spielberg is explaining to a room full of British journalists about his motivations for the film ‘Catch me if You Can’, from his niche love of “broken family” narratives to conning himself into a job on a movie lot as a teen (disputed) – it’s ‘The Fabelmans’ (2022) 20 years before ‘The Fabelmans’ was even made! However, this presser also includes a timorous Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks (who is frankly done with junkets here) alongside the legendary(?) Frank Abagnale - who conned his way across the states in the 1970s and is affectionately deferred to by all on the panel! The full rushes of this press conference can now be found on Getty – just in time for the end of the Cannes Film Festival!
…And it’s been just over a year since that?controversial Will and Kate Caribbean tour for the Platinum Jubilee, but now thanks to @Parmiter, Tom and the fabulous ITN camera crews we can bring you the full extended rushes of this tour, with further rushes from the Jamaican reaction to the coronation dropping in the next few weeks too – a timely set of uploads as reports of Jamaican commonwealth departure continue to build.
Coinciding once again with our South Africa project, we’ve recently uploaded a series of reports covering Nelson Mandela’s visit to Brixton and thereafter rousing speech in Trafalgar Square, 1996! It’s never a bad time to see some Mandela dancing content (frequent - he loved to move!). Catch these infectious reports and a memorable speech, promising to take crowds with him in his pockets back to SA, on Getty now!
And we’ve recently uploaded our oldest content on national treasure Ewan McGregor – a special 9-minute report with Jon Snow on everything from New Labour, Princess Diana, to wanting to be Noel Gallagher for a day, and his station as an “icon” for the youth (26 years old at time of interviewing!).

?And a return to riots this week, we’ve been covering the fallout of riots in Cardiff following a crash that left two teens dead in Ely earlier this week. Expect more content on this in the coming days as the rushes return!
And we’ve come full circle this week as ITN’s Jordan Jarrett-Bryan?sat down with Gary Lineker in Rome to double down on his recent advocacy that led to a very public spat with the BBC a few months ago. Watch Lineker talk vindication, on the heels of receiving an Amnesty International Award for his work, on Getty now!

And we’ve rounded up our best content on the Queen of Rock and Roll, Tina Turner, who sadly passed away this week aged 83 after a series of health complications – always thinking ahead in the archive, this footage may be familiar, having been digitised and advertised in new gems by archive guru @Harris, Matthew just two months ago!
On this week in History
24th May 1969: ITN followed John Lennon and Yoko Ono through LAP (now Heathrow Airport) as the couple took leave for the Bahamas, ‘The Ballad of John and Yoko’ – the Beatle’s final UK number one single - would be released the following week.
23rd May 1979: ITN’s Martyn Lewis followed two Sussex men seeking to outdo one another on the price of an 8-bed house via an amateur boxing match… when asked how the men had prepped for the fight one replied that he’d increased his cigarette intake – because what other answer would a man selling and 8-bed house in 1979 give!?
19th May 1993: Celebrations were held in the Peak District for the 50th anniversary of the Dambusters raids, seeing Lancaster Bombers cover the English countryside once more. The last survivor of the Dambusters squads George Leonard “Johnny” Johnson passed away at 101 just last year!
