New Gems from the ITN Archive
Budapest Memorandum (1994)
In 1994, the United States, Russia and the UK signed an agreement with Ukraine, under the terms of which Ukraine surrendered its Soviet-era nuclear weapons in return for assurances of its territorial integrity - similar agreements were also made with post-Soviet Belarus (under Lukashenko) and Kazakhstan (under Nazarbayev). The agreement has since been violated by Russia, first in 2014 and again since 2022 - needless to say, the paper has not ensured Ukraine's territorial integrity. This week, we digitised and uploaded ITN's original rushes of the signing, which now join our other digitised rushes from the summit on the site – big thanks to Matt Harris for sorting this out!
Nehru, Zhou Enlai and John Kenneth Gailbraith during the Sino-Indian War (1962)
?And inspired from our recent appraisal trips to Cinelab we’ve recently uploaded these fresh clips of Jawaharlal Nehru around the Sino-Indian War, 1962. In one, a key figure in the administrations of JFK and LBJ, John Kenneth Galbraith meets with Nehru to discuss ongoing fighting, as a ceasefire hangs in the balance. In another, the successor to Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai visits Gandhi’s tomb on a diplomatic tour. Ten years later Enlai would battle against the Gang of Four – on which we also have some excellent reports!
Belize and Guatemala (1990s)
?And further consolidating our collections from further afield, we’ve recently uploaded these reports on one of Britain’s last colonial outposts; Belize, with rushes of the British withdrawal digitising as this email goes out, and coming to site very soon! From Guatemalan aggression to concerns about Castro, catch these reports on site now!
Conservative conference (1989)
?And some fresh Thatcher for good measure, newly digitised rushes from the 1989 Conservative Party conference, a far cry from the conservative conferences of the 2020s. Catch Mrs Thatcher’s response to a crowd-wide ‘Happy Birthday’ by clicking the images above! Thanks to both John and Stasia for their work on getting these rushes on the site!
Pat Boone (1956)
And a freshly uploaded interview with Elvis-adjacent musician Pat Boone. Interviewed by Lynne Reid-Banks at the Granada Cinema (which hosted a series of performers including Frank Sinatra’s first ever UK shows), Boone would cover early fame and his reluctance to re-record songs originated by black artists, including Fats Domino and Little Richard.
