New gems from the ITN Archive: Claudia Cardinale / Netanyahu / Georgia / Cambodia

A new beautiful HD scan from our friends at Cinelab - actress Claudia Cardinale at London Airport in 1964.

Protests have continued this month in Tbilisi, following the victory of the pro-Russian Georgian Dream party in the October elections. In 1991, ITN filmed in the city after its declaration of independence from the USSR, but before this had been recognized by Moscow. Russian interference in the region continues to be a dividing line in Georgia’s politics today. The above rushes were recently digitized and include footage of the first president Zvia Gamsakhurdia.

We’ve digitised some more footage of Princess Diana, including a visit to the Centrepoint Charity, and a homeless centre in South London.

In 1994, Jon Snow interviewed Israeli opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu on his reaction to a Hamas suicide bomb in Tel Aviv, which killed 22. Netanyahu would narrowly win the general election 2 years later - following the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, and a series of further terror attacks.

Also recently digitised: two interviews with Julie Walters; one from the London News Network, and another on her 1999 investiture.

Next year will mark fifty years since the Cambodian genocide, in which almost a quarter of the country’s population was killed. Reporting from inside Democratic Kamupchea at the time was impossible - but ITN’s Sandy Gall visited the country in 1980, for a series of reports on the aftermath.

We also have a lot of undigitised rushes from Cambodia in the 1990s, including King Sihanouk’s return to the country.
