The pandemic has taught us that remote work is here to stay. It's no longer a question of whether employees can be productive from afar; rather, it's a matter of how businesses can leverage this newfound flexibility. As labor shortages and rising wages make it increasingly difficult for companies to retain talent, a new trend is emerging of remote work outsourcing of jobs overseas.?
I talk to five-ten leaders each week about hybrid and remote work, and while a few months ago the exclusive focus was on the return to the office, the conversation is increasingly shifting to cutting costs as the economic situation grows worse. Indeed, the number of people working remotely has been trending up in the last couple of months, according to a LinkedIn survey. And office occupancy averaged across 10 large metro areas fell below 50% after rising above that number in the start of 2023.
The Rise of International Remote Work
Companies have already embraced the idea of remote work, as they witnessed employees maintain or even increase productivity while working from home during the pandemic. Now, they're taking it one step further by looking beyond our borders for cheaper, yet still talented labor.
According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, 7.3% of US senior managers surveyed by the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta said they were moving more jobs abroad as a result of remote work. Nicholas Bloom, an economist at Stanford University, estimates that 10% to 20% of US service support jobs like software developers, HR professionals, and payroll administrators could move overseas in the next decade.

Instead of labeling it outsourcing, I prefer the term "distributed teams" as it emphasizes collaboration rather than simply cost-cutting. In my experience, if you want to hire people from countries where talent costs are lower, you've got to find partners who share your values and a business model that makes sense for both parties. I've been providing talents from India to global companies that are interested in and understand the value of distributed teams. Building trust is key, and treating remote team members like they're right there with you is crucial. Being flexible in how you manage and invest in the tools and systems that support remote work is also super important. It's all about making distance work for you, not against you. I see this trend as a way to bring in fresh perspectives and ideas from around the world while making sure everyone gets a fair shot. It's not just about saving a buck; it's about making global teamwork a reality.

1 年Moving to a remote first strategy will actually help with outsourcing as well. In the past, companies have developed tunnel vision around the potential cost savings of geo-arbitrage and ended up with mixed results because they just did a handoff, and didn't address policies and workflows. When employees can work from anywhere without there being any difference, outsourced workers can more easily plug into that same ecosystem. There might be a few hr/payroll issues depending on the country, but companies should be able to leverage global talent better, if they have the right foundation in place first.

1 年International outsourcing is not new though. But with more companies having had to get used to remote management, suddenly more companies are considering it as an option. Your points on cultural differences, work ethic differences etc is thus well made. But - companies also need to consider regulations. For example- South Africa has been a popular option for international resources. But the local Revenue Tax service (SARS) is considering making it mandatory for companies employing RSA citizens in South Africa to refuse as an employer. The amount of additional bureaucracy will in many cases negate the benefits and companies will withdraw.
