New features, old disappointment
One of the new features for Power BI announced at Ignite was the Premium Per User pricing, this is a fantastic improvement which offers a number of the features which were only available with Premium capacity. These include artificial intelligence, more frequent refresh rate, deployment pipelines larger datasets and lots of other amazing goodies. Which are all worth exploring to see what benefits they can bring to your organisation, Credit where it's due, this does address, one of the issues with the PowerBI ecosystem. There is no doubt in my mind this feature will be the something they have been waiting for. Hopefully its something I might be able to afford to explore once the pricing has been announced.
Most of my clients which my current company works with are SME's. Which is no surprise when you consider just how many companies are SME's in the UK. "When 99.9% of businesses in Britain are SMEs and they generate 51% of all UK business turnover" What do most of my clients want to do with Power BI Reports? SHARE THE REPORTS WITH THEIR CUSTOMERS.
What I hoped would happen with this announcement is that there would be some middle ground. Something sat in between a Pro Licence and the relatively expensive Premium capacity. That has not happened, so my webinar titled "Power BI Licensing Made Simple" the content has not significantly changed (as I hoped it might). Yes, I need to add this feature, the main point of the webinar is still there, sadly. The 3rd party options for sharing reports that are covered in the webinar still very relevant. Want to find out how to share your PowerBI reports without paying Premium prices? There are ways to do it just ask me ??.
Is this going to win me any prizes? No. My primary focus is my clients and ensuring they use technology to drive improvements, increase profitability, make things better. Hence I will continue to tell people what I think is good and what is not so good. Oh yes, I am just as critical of vendors products, just ask. You will get my opinion, you might not like it, you might disagree, does not mean I will not listen to your opinion.

4 年I agree. The main barrier to adoption for the Power family is licensing. Power platform licensing means that people inadvertently run the risk of multiplexing so they don't proceed with the project. Many platform projects involve moving data around. I wrote about it here https://jenstirrup.com/2020/08/25/delivering-power-platform-projects-truths-from-the-field/ I read an article that said Microsoft expect many SMEs to go out of business due to the virus so they were concentrating on larger enterprises.. I'll dig out the reference later. However, by eschewing this audience, there is an opportunity cost.
