Crypto Twitter has praised Nike for its community-building savvy. But more than a successful case study in community building, Nike’s Web3 move is a perfect example of tapping into emerging cultures to reach new audiences and get ahead of the competition.

Culture has been at the core of Nike’s strategy throughout the years. Branching out from sports performance, the brand has secured its status as a cultural icon in sports, music, lifestyle and art. It’s no surprise it’s taking the same approach in the budding Web3 and metaverse spaces.

?? Comic Con NY 2022 Blended Web3 and Pop Culture Fandoms (Coin Desk )

The show is selling non-fungible tokens (NFT) dubbed “krap chickens,” which offer gated access to real-world events, a virtual viewing room for behind-the-scenes content and voting rights on the elements inside the show. In the first episode sneak peek, which premiered at Comic Con, krap chicken holders voted on which sailor in the show gets slapped by a Kraken.

NFT holders at Comic Con also received front-row seats to Harmon’s panel, as well as the ability to cut the line for his autograph.

So far, 3,000 of the 10,420 krap chickens have already been sold. Matt Bilfield, Krapopolis project lead at Blockchain Creative Labs, said the number was set at “10,420 chickens because that’s how long it could roughly take a chicken to run the marathon.”

??, After Launch of NFT Marketplace (Coin Desk )

Reddit users appear to be upvoting non-fungible tokens (NFT).

The social network’s users have opened over 2.5 million crypto wallets on the platform since Reddit released its NFT marketplace in July.

?? Introducing New Features to Facebook Groups (Meta Communities Summit )

Meta Say's:

We’re adding more options for people to connect over shared interests, including Reels in Facebook Groups and updates to your Group profile.

To help admins build culture in their groups, we’re testing a new way to highlight top contributing members and adding a new daily summary of actions in Admin Assist.

New Ways to Engage More Deeply With Your Communities

As people come to Facebook to discover content and communities, we’re adding more ways to connect over shared interests.

Reels in Groups let you express your voice in your communities through creative and immersive videos. With Reels now in Groups, community members can share information, tell stories and connect on a deeper level. Imagine people in a makeup-obsessed group sharing their latest techniques and beauty finds with fellow members. Group admins and members can also add creative elements such as audio, text overlay and filters on top of their videos before sharing to bring their stories to life.

The ability to share a public Facebook event for your community to your Instagram story. Whether you’re a group admin hosting a meet-up to celebrate a community milestone, or a group member sharing your passion with friends, this feature can help you showcase your community more broadly.

We’re testing updates to your Group profile to make it easier to foster community relationships and connect with other members. With these new updates you can:

Customize the information in your About Me section to highlight information you want to share with your community. This can help both admins and members learn more about one another and create content that best reflects the group’s interests.

Add an indicator to your profile if you’re open to messaging. This can help other like-minded members know that you’re willing to connect over shared interests.

?? Facebook owner Meta to sell Giphy after UK watchdog confirms ruling (Guardian )

Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has been ordered by the UK competition watchdog to sell the gif creation website Giphy, the first time the regulator has blocked a deal struck by a big Silicon Valley company.

The Competition and Markets Authority told Meta in November that the only way to resolve competition concerns was to dispose of Giphy, the largest supplier of animated gifs to social networks such as Snapchat, TikTok and Twitter, which it acquired two years ago for $400m (£290m).

Meta appealed against the decision, which the regulator said would “protect millions of social media users” and stop Facebook “increasing its significant power in social media”, which was upheld by the Competition Appeal Tribunal on five of the six grounds challenged.

?? Instagram's latest feature: scheduled posts (Mashable )

Creators can already schedule their Live videos up to 90 days in advance, but this new feature would allow anyone to schedule their grid posts ahead of time. The change was first spotted by a few users who had the option to try it out.

?? Instagram is adding more kindness nudges as part of its plan to combat harassment (Vox )

It’s no secret that Instagram has major problems with harassment and bullying on its platform. One recent example: a report that Instagram failed to act on 90 percent of over 8,700 abusive messages received by several high-profile women, including actress Amber Heard.

To try to make its app a more hospitable place, Instagram is rolling out features that will start reminding people to be respectful in two different scenarios: Now, anytime you send a message to a creator for the first time (Instagram defines a creator as someone with more than 10,000 followers or users who set up “creator” accounts) or when you reply to an offensive comment thread, Instagram will show a message on the bottom of your screen asking you to be respectful.

?? Salad daze: lettuce and tofu to the fore as Twitter digests Truss’s departure (Guardian )

With an unlikely war cry of “Lettuce! Lettuce! Lettuce!”, social media users set about the aftermath of Liz Truss’s resignation with gusto. The Daily Star’s live stream of whether a lettuce could outlast her time in office was a strong cue for jokes.

?? Elon Musk reportedly wants to fire most of Twitter's employees (The Verge )

bout 7,500 people currently work at Twitter — and 75 percent of them can expect to be shown the door, The Washington Post reports. Elon Musk, who is acquiring the company, has been telling prospective investors that he plans drastic firings to bring down costs.

Musk has a deadline to close the purchase of Twitter by October 28th. In a sign the deal is proceeding, Twitter froze its employees’ equity awards, Bloomberg reported. Anonymous sources tell The Post that the deal is moving forward in good faith.

??LinkedIn Adds Automatic Captions To Videos (SEJ )

LinkedIn is upgrading video content with automatically generated captions and adding several new features to assist people with accessibility needs.

With automatic captions, LinkedIn aims to make videos more accessible to those who are deaf, hard of hearing, or prefer to watch videos with the sound off.

LinkedIn will automatically add captions to videos during the upload process, which you can choose to implement immediately or review and edit for accuracy.

??TikTok Parent ByteDance Planned To Use TikTok To Monitor The Physical Location Of Specific American Citizens (Forbes )

A China-based team at TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, planned to use the TikTok app to monitor the personal location of some specific American citizens, according to materials reviewed by Forbes.

The team behind the monitoring project — ByteDance’s Internal Audit and Risk Control department — is led by Beijing-based executive Song Ye, who reports to ByteDance cofounder and CEO Rubo Liang.

The team primarily conducts investigations into potential misconduct by current and former ByteDance employees. But in at least two cases, the Internal Audit team also planned to collect TikTok data about the location of a U.S. citizen who had never had an employment relationship with the company, the materials show. It is unclear from the materials whether data about these Americans was actually collected; however, the plan was for a Beijing-based ByteDance team to obtain location data from U.S. users’ devices.

TikTok spokesperson Maureen Shanahan said that TikTok collects approximate location information based on users’ IP addresses to “among other things, help show relevant content and ads to users, comply with applicable laws, and detect and prevent fraud and inauthentic behavior."
