In a recent interview, Canadian Immigration Minister, Sean Frazer revealed that he is in the midst of developing a completely new pathway to permanent residency.
This pathway will see more temporary residents becoming permanent residents at a much faster rate.
Frazer reveals that the policy is intended to address the needs of international students and foreign workers in becoming permanent residents. By extension, this move will address some of the current labour shortages in Canada.
The immigration minister gives this policy focus as Canada’s unemployment rate hits an all-time low.
According to Statistics Canada, only 5.1% of the labour force is unemployed, and the ratio of unemployed people to job vacancies is just 1.2. In March of this year, Canadian employers struggled to fill more than one million job vacancies, a Canadian record high.
Retaining international students and temporary foreign workers is paramount to addressing this issue.
Though the details of the policy are yet to be revealed, the aim is to create a policy that’s less responsive and more proactive in the face of an emergency.
With that, the immigration minister says he is on the wire to develop a policy framework following a motion in the House of Commons last month. So we can expect a presentation within the next 120 days.
