IMEG was hired by a leading builder of manufactured and modular homes.?The customer has multiple manufacturing plants across the United States which build homes to meet appropriate state, national, and international building standards.

The Problem

  • Development of a new manufacturing plant including main assembly and subassembly lines
  • Insufficient manufacturing capacity
  • Inefficient manufacturing process including large travel distance between processing and point-of-use locations

The Plan

  • Develop an improved plant layout
  • Complete an analysis using MODAPTS to estimate process times
  • Develop a work combination chart to help understand manning usage and requirements
  • Complete floor space and travel distance analyses to improve floor space usage and reduce travel distances

The Result

  • Improved layout and floor space utilization for subassembly areas reducing manufacturing area by 6.8%
  • Material storage re-organization led to a 45% reduction in travel distance
  • 9% increase in available space for material storage
  • Verified that process could meet capacity requirements
