New EU Regulation 2021/2117 explained: E-Labels Required for Wine Imports

This new law mandates the use of electronic labels (e-labels) for all wine products intended for the EU market.

In accordance with this regulation, wine producers and exporters must ensure that each bottle of wine destined for import into EU countries is equipped with an e-label containing comprehensive information about the product's ingredients and nutritional values. This move towards digital labeling aims to enhance transparency, streamline regulatory compliance, and provide consumers with easy access to essential product information.

  • Wines produced after December 8, 2023 require e-labels.
  • Wine can be considered as “produced” when primary alcoholic fermentation is completed and the required alcoholic strength and acidity are achieved. Sparkling wines are considered as “produced” after the second alcoholic fermentation.
  • A list of all ingredients contained in the product must be provided.
  • All ingredients must be displayed in descending order of weight (the ingredients constituting less than 2% of the finished product may be listed in a different order after the other ingredients).
  • In case of allergies or intolerances, the list of ingredients must include all additives used in the production of wine.
  • The order of presentation of the compulsory elements of the nutrition declaration (in tabular or linear format) is as follows: Energy, Fat (of which saturates, …); Carbohydrate (of which sugars, …); Protein, Salt.
  • When the amount of nutrient information is negligible, or shown as “0”, it can be stated in this way: "contains negligible amount of ..."
  • E-labels must not contain marketing information and cannot be used for marketing purposes (including for collecting user data).
