A New Era in Saudi Agriculture

A New Era in Saudi Agriculture

Saudi Arabia, historically characterized by vast deserts and an arid climate, is experiencing a significant transformation in its agricultural sector. By embracing advanced technologies and implementing progressive policies, the kingdom aims to improve food security and decrease reliance on imports.

As of 2024, agriculture contributes roughly 2.5% to the national GDP, with key products including dates, poultry, and various fruits and vegetables. Notably, Saudi Arabia produces over 1.6 million metric tons of dates annually, making it one of the world's leading producers. Additionally, the kingdom has seen a 25% increase in wheat production, with domestic output projected to reach approximately 1.5 million metric tons for FY 2024-25.

Trade Dynamics: Commodities and Fertilizers

Saudi Arabia, renowned for its robust domestic production, also stands out as a powerhouse in global agricultural trade. The Kingdom proudly exports premier-quality dates, dairy products, and poultry to diverse markets worldwide. Saudi dates, in particular, have carved a notable presence in markets like China, where shipments skyrocketed by an astounding 121% last year. Globally, exports surged by 14%, reaching an impressive $389 million in 2023.

On the import front, Saudi Arabia remains a key player, acquiring substantial quantities of grains, meat, and agricultural machinery. Despite importing 3.7 million metric tons of wheat for 2023-24, the Kingdom is steadily increasing local production through initiatives aimed at self-sufficiency. Complementing this, strategic investments in fertilizer production are set to boost market size by a 7.4% CAGR, reaching nearly $993 billion by 2029, crucial for supporting both local and international agricultural activities.

Moreover, the animal feed market saw remarkable growth, valued at around $3 billion in 2023. This surge, driven by rising health consciousness, has led to increased demand for healthier livestock feed, particularly for poultry.

Paving the Way with Government Initiatives

Saudi Arabia’s agricultural sector faces challenges like water scarcity and soil degradation. To address these, the government has committed $10 billion to enhance food security by boosting local production and reducing import reliance. This includes plans to plant 1.2 million coffee trees by 2026 to diversify the economy and enrich the coffee culture, opening opportunities for suppliers of coffee machinery.

The kingdom is embracing Agritech innovations such as hydroponics, vertical farming, drone technology, and AI-driven solutions to increase productivity. A partnership with a Dutch company aims to create energy-efficient, climate-resilient farming systems through a self-sustaining horticultural oasis. Additionally, the Sonbola program supports agricultural startups by fostering an entrepreneurial community and offering initiatives like incubators and food tech programs.

Further propelling this transformation is the $500 billion NEOM mega-city project, set to become a hub for innovative agricultural technologies. Investments in the agricultural sector are projected to reach $70 billion by 2030, fueling research and development for sustainable practices and technologies. And this isn't even the end! There's so much more to explore in the diverse world of Saudi Arabia's agriculture.
