New Episode: A New Era in Female Biology, Health and Ageing ??

We are kicking off Season 2 with a powerhouse conversation featuring Jennifer Garrison - - the MOTHER of a new movement in female health.

Jennifer has a PhD in neuroscience, is the Co-founder and Director of the ProductiveHealth.org (formerly GCRLE) and an Assistant Professor at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging .

GCRLE is advancing (and funding!) visionary scientific research in ovarian biology and reproductive ageing.

?? Ovarian biology is a field of science worth paying very close attention to right now. Emerging research in this field is reshaping how we look at female health altogether.

Reshaping the future of medicine

In this conversation, Jennifer redefines the term “longevity” and challenges the very foundation of how we think about ageing. She explains that, for women, ovaries are the "pacemakers" of ageing and the architects of health.

Ironically, we didn't talk about fertility. That's because ovaries play a much bigger role. They influence everything from metabolic and endocrine functions to psychological well-being.

This new paradigm could reshape the future of medicine.

In this episode, you'll learn about

  • What does "longevity" really mean?
  • Do women and men age differently?
  • What roles do hormones play in our body?
  • What is "ovarian ageing" and why does it matter?
  • What are the big questions in female ageing research?
  • What can female biology teach us about the universe?
  • Is there a link between PCOS, endometriosis, and menopause?
  • How has Jennifer’s thinking evolved recently?
  • Are biological "ageing clocks" ready for prime time?
  • Could there be new hormones yet to be discovered?
  • How different are female and male brains?
  • Jennifer's plans for the future

The female body as a microcosm.

One of my favourite moments of the interview was when Jennifer said:

The female body is the microcosm for the universe, our planet. Everything is interconnected. You can zoom in, orders of margnitude, and its just as complex as when its zoomed out. The more you look, the more complex it gets.

And that, right there, is what Jennifer's point of view represents. No hype, no oversimplification. Pure science, curiosity and appreciating the fascinating complexity of our biology.

Speaking of complexity:

The biggest mind-bend for me was when Jennifer teased the idea that there are hormones and signalling processes between the brain and the ovaries that we haven't even discovered yet.

Think about estrogen and how important it is in our health. There may be more hormones like that discovered in the future.

A wild idea, right?

I loved recording this episode. If you enjoy listening to it, I’d love to hear from you in comments or DMs.

  • Can menstrual blood become the ultimate biohacking tool for women?
  • What makes the female brain different?
  • How does female sexuality change throughout a woman's life?
  • Can breastmilk microbiome hold the answers to human health?
  • What happens inside a women-only psychedelic retreat?
