I'm very excited to announce that new ebook and audio editions of my first book, the 1993 runaway bestseller, Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years, will be published by Blackstone Publishing on Jan. 3.
A New York Times bestseller for 117 weeks in the 1990s, Having Our Say was adapted to the Broadway stage and for an award-winning film. Called a "classic" oral history by Newsweek magazine, Having Our Say remains a favorite in American high school and college-level classrooms.
The story of two centenarian sisters who were the daughters of a man born into slavery and a mixed-race mother, Having Our Say provides a view of American history and culture told from a largely-overlooked perspective and in a very personal, candid, and memorable way. The two sisters, far ahead of their time, declined marriage proposals, instead choosing to live together while they pursued higher education and groundbreaking careers. Their accomplishments were extraordinary for women - especially Black women - at that time.
The book, however, is not a dry accounting of their lives. It is by turns heartwarming, angry, wistful, poignant, charming, and funny. One of the most famous quotes comes from Bessie, the "little" sister of the pair, when she explains her belief that their longevity stemmed from the fact that neither of them had ever married. "We never had husbands who worried us to death!" she declared.
