New Docks for Los Angeles County, Bonelli Park Sailboat Cove

Los Angeles County Parks & Recreation Department recently completed the renovation of the Bonelli Park Sailboat Cove launch ramp facility with the installation of two new vessel boarding docks.

The two 10’ x 80’ docks both provide easy ADA accessibility with a low-freeboard dock designed for kayaks, SUPs and canoes, and standard vessel access from the other dock. The 10 foot wide, concrete deck floating docks were specifically designed to provide a very stable platform capable of handling heavy public access loads and traffic.

Project management and design was led by J Mills, Marina Business Associates, and both aluminum and steel frame dock systems were considered to meet County and California state marine specifications.

“The County’s load and engineering specifications for the docks were very stringent and required a number of design enhancements to typical dock engineering,” explained J Mills. “After considering several different dock manufacturers, we were able to meet all the required design and cost parameters with a galvanized steel-truss system and aluminum gangways from Meeco Sullivan.”

Both docks are anchored with a ‘master-cable & yoke’ system to provide easy adjustment to changing water levels and secure anchorage in changing weather conditions. Because of the heavy-duty design and different freeboard required for each dock, specially designed poly-encapsulated floatation by Eagle Floats was used along with K&R RockFace concrete decking.

Final assembly of the pre-fabricated docks and installation, including the deep-water anchors and master-cable installation, was handled by local contractor Trinity Construction.

The finished docks are designed to provide a low-maintenance and durable system for the Los Angeles County Parks staff to easily manage during an active recreational season on the lake.
