Soroker Agmon Nordman was chosen by the IAB to partake in a pilot project seeking to compile privacy law across the globe into one user friendly compendium. Multiple jurisdictions from around the world partook in this project, providing insights as well as an overview to local privacy law.?
Here in Israel, nothing is as straightforward and simple as it sounds, especially not privacy law. Did you know that the most recent significant update to privacy law in Israel was made in 2007, and that our Privacy Law was enacted back in 1981?!?
Israel is an extremely technologically advanced country, and the outdated legislation does not match our booming high-tech sector. As result of this tremendous gap, a lot of market practice has come into play. We provided the IAB with an in-depth analysis of actual privacy law here and equipped the compendium reader with practical understandings and implications of how privacy law plays out in Israel.?
Time and time again the Israeli Ministry of Justice has tried to put forward new privacy legislation, but it fell behind. The political unrest and COVID-19 frustrated these efforts. To our excitement, as we put the finishing touches on this project and prepared for the webinar which we held a few weeks ago, some exciting developments occurred.?
A new bill was proposed and approved in first hearing and is to be deliberate by a Knesset Committee. This means that a reform is on its way. ?
As we prepared for the Q&A portion of the webinar, we monitored the proposed bill and sought ways to incorporate its update to our panel. The result was better than we could have anticipated. Our webinar did not only provide an overview of the work we did with the IAB in the Cross-Jurisdiction Privacy Project, but we also got to discuss the newest developments in Israeli Privacy Law.?

As this bill edges closer to becoming materialized, more and more webinars and speeches on this topic are sprouting up, but we are proud to say that we were the first!?
A recording of the webinar can be found below, Eran Soroker – founding partner of Soroker Agmon Nordman, and Devorah Spigelman, our legal clerk, were honored to be panelists at the event.?
