HVAC systems (Heating, Ventilation, and Air conditioning) provide great benefit in the summer season as they safeguard us from the harsh heat and humidity associated with the afternoons of this season. The HVAC systems usually come with dehumidifiers, however, they are not very energy efficient, and take around 76% of the electricity that is consumed by commercial and residential buildings.
To solve this problem, researchers have now brought forward a certain organic material by the name polyimides. This might bring great benefit to the HVAC System Market as it uses less energy to dry air in comparison to current dehumidifiers present in the market. In addition, the new polymide based humidifiers could also make HVAC system more cost efficient, which currently needs thousands of dollars as expenditure.
Dehumidifiers make the air comfortably dry by removing the moisture from it. This leads to better air quality and also eliminates the dust mites present in atmosphere. The more general dehumidifiers available are refrigerants. However, as they involve green house gases, they couldn’t be used for this study. Similarly, zeolites which naturally occur could have been an alternative. But there problem involved with these type of dehumidifiers is that they cannot be used for industrial scale and have undesirable mechanical properties.
Thus, the scientists chose cost-effective organic material, known as polyimides for their research. The component is well known for their rigidity and tolerance for chemicals and heat. At the level of molecules, the basic unit of these polymers are repeating, ring-like imide groups that are connected with each other in long chains. The polymer receives its strength from attractive forces between the imides and due to this strength, polymide was considered to be better than zeolites.?

The several experiments in relation with the polymer done by the researchers revealed that polymide membranes are very permeable to water molecules. This denotes that the membrane has the ability to extract excess moisture from the air through confining it in the percolation channels. It was noted that these membrane do not need regeneration and could be operated continuously. This is because the trapped water molecules leave by a vacuum pump that is placed within a standard dehumidifier.
The study proposed by the team is a novel approach that could lead to improvement in the property of a polymer for dehumidification. The polymer-based membranes might facilitate bringing into the world next generation of HVAC and dehumidifier technologies that are not only efficient but also have smaller carbon footprint. However, before the application is made available there is still a level of optimization that needs to be achieved to further enhance its performance.?
