The motor is planed to optimize the efficiency of the fuel cell and significantly extend its service life.
By 2022 a media gap motor (MSM) will be developed. as beeing called project "Recirculation Blower Development for Fuel Cell Technology" This electric motor is characterized by a particularly large gap between magnet and coil. Through this the medium can be led directly through the motor and cools it at the same time.
This mode of operation is intended to optimize the efficiency of the fuel cell and extend its service life. The media gap motor will serve as a drive for the axial recirculation fan, in which hydrogen is hermetically encapsulated and transported without dynamic seals. On the other hand, the media gap motor can also act as an electric compressor to transport oxygen into the fuel cell and water out of it.
The media gap motor had already been developed as electrical support for turbochargers for internal combustion engines; the right to use off-highway internal combustion engines with more than 450 kilowatts was acquired from Rolls-Royce Power Systems. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy as part of the "Central Innovation Program for SMEs" (ZIM).
