New deal reached for Wellington
Big changes heralded for Pōneke in today's announcement.

New deal reached for Wellington

This week I sat down with Infrastructure & Housing Minister Chris Bishop; Transport Minister Simeon Brown, and Chair of Greater Wellington Regional Council Daran Ponter to talk about the future of Wellington transport.

I’m really happy to say that we reached agreement and now have a much clearer vision for Wellington moving forward.?

Firstly, construction of the Golden Mile will continue.

We agreed that Wellington City Council will take over delivery of this revitalisation project.?By bringing this important project in-house we can ensure it is delivered as cost effectively as possible and have closer engagement with local businesses. The government's financial support for the project will remain intact at 51%.

Let’s Get Wellington Moving?will be dissolved. As they have made clear from the beginning, this was always going to happen. Ensuring we can still continue work on the Golden Mile and explore options for more housing and urban development is the best outcome possible and means progress can continue.

Central government will also build and fund the second Mt Victoria tunnel. While, I do not support this second tunnel, it is a priority of the new Government and they have committed to funding 100% of its costs. Meanwhile, at the Council, we will continue improving public transport and walking and cycling options to give people more ways of getting around the city.?

It is really helpful to have a clear sense of direction from the Government and commitment to investing in the infrastructure we need.?

I am really glad to have found areas of collaboration where we can look to develop a housing and urban growth precinct with the acquisition of land for this development. As our population is projected to grow, this is the focus Wellington desperately needs.?

That's fantastic news! ?? As Winston Churchill said, "We shape our buildings; thereafter, they shape us." Your dedication is shaping a bright future for everyone. Keep up the remarkable work! ??♂???? #Inspiration #GoldenMileProgress

Another disastrous idealistic misuse of taxpayer money while we struggle to fund health children and those in need . Miles of unused cycle lanes, water flooding our streets from unattended leaks, unmoved parks , massive money gobbling rebuilds , and we continue to think sinking millions of dollars we don’t have into an restricted access dying retail area . It’s not rocket science

Why? It doesn't benefit anyone outside the CBD. & why are we spending so much taxpayer money on Golden Mile, when there are civil infrastructure issues across the district? Wellington Water needs a financial boost to fix the numerous broken pipes. Just head to the Johnsonville Facebook page, the majority of our streets have busted pipes, and that's just the Western Bays, goodness knows what or how the Eastern and Southern belts are fairing - probably just as poorly. If Wellington goes into water restrictions this summer, it'll be because you decided to fund a retail street over infrastructure.
