Bruton Knowles Landmark LinkedIn Newsletter #5

New Customer, CPO Order Completion, Charity Fundraising, New Starters and More

Welcome to Landmark, the LinkedIn Newsletter from Bruton Knowles.

In this edition, we celebrate the signing of a significant new client for our firm, mark a vital bit of team work from our land agents, showcase the BK Netball team, as well as hearing from major heads across the business and welcome our new starters who have joined the firm!

New Client Signs Four-Year Contract

Bruton Knowles signs deal with UK Power Networks

Bruton Knowles is delighted to announce it has signed a major four-year contract with UK Power Networks .

Covered within the work will be supporting UKPN in maintaining electricity networks across London, the South East and East of England – and the new contract marks a significant win for the firm.

The work is due to be carried out by the Bruton Knowles National Utilities & Infrastructure Team, and will include resources for the company’s Capital Programme, Asset Management and London Property.

Within the scope of the work with UK Power Networks will be ongoing projects that involve obtaining, maintaining and retaining all consents associated with operational apparatus and the distribution network. This includes consents for steel tower lines, wooden pole lines, underground cables and land for substation and switching stations and rights of access.

Gillian Froud , Head of Utilities & Infrastructure South for Bruton Knowles, said the contract was huge for her team: “Our team works across a huge amount of projects across the country, but this partnership with UK Power Networks is one of the largest we have won this year so far.

“Such work will play to the strengths in place within the Utilities & Infrastructure National Team, as we forge our new partnership with UK Power Networks.”

Congratulations to Gill and her team!

Harker Enabling Project CPO Confirmed

Bruton Knowles is extremely pleased to see that the Harker Enabling Project CPO has been confirmed.

The order provides land rights for the project, which now enables the extension of the existing Harker Substation to adjacent land to go ahead.

The project will see the reconfiguration of overhead lines to connect the new extension and the addition of new conductors to 8km of existing pylons that run from Harker Substation to the Scottish Border.

The use of CPO powers under the Electricity Act is rarely used but the delivery of this order shows that where existing apparatus requires an upgrade, the CPO approach can be a success.

Well done to Chris Renshaw and the team of Bruton Knowles land agents who negotiated the agreement with the land owners in such a way that a public enquiry was not needed - great work all.

BK Supports South West Charity Netball Event

BK's Charity Netball Team

Earlier this summer, several of our colleagues participated in the HCR Law Charity Netball tournament at Cheltenham College - which saw £3,800 raised for three excellent charities.

A Bruton Knowles team, including Dorian Wragg, Ben Compton, Tegan K. , Jack Shepherd MARLA and Lauren Gaunt achieved 4th place in the event, a great improvement from 7th in 2023 - with only one goal conceded, up to the semi-final stage.

HR Director, Neil Young, BA (Hons), MA, Chartered Fellow CIPD said: "Our team of Netballers played a great tournament, and helped to raise a fantastic amount of money for three important charities.

"It's great to see our colleagues coming together to support our local communities in such a great way. We're already making plans for next year - when we hope to take top spot!"

Vital funds were raised on the day for excellent causes in The Nelson Trust, Linc Cymru and The Pied Piper Appeal.

Well done to our friends at HCR Law for hosting such a successful event, and we look forward to returning in 2025!

Day in the life of U&I Partner, Sam Dobney

Utilities & Infrastructure Partner, Sam Dobney

What can you expect from a day as a Partner in the Bruton Knowles Utilities & Infrastructure team?

We caught up with Sam Dobney MCSM MRICS to find out:

"First thing in the morning, I like to use my time reviewing emails, catch-up on any work for the day ahead and preparing for my client calls.

"Client meetings and site visits can make up a lot of my time but in my role no two days are really the same. One day I can be dealing with a road scheme in Derbyshire and another I can be dealing with a Pylon Reinforcement DCO in Suffolk - but I do thoroughly enjoy the variety.

"The flexible working that Bruton Knowles offers greatly benefits me as I am often out and about working remotely to best serve my clients needs.

"However, I like to make sure I go into my closest hub when I can to connect with colleagues and catch up on major projects - it's important to keep that face-to-face connection."

Get in contact with Sam, by emailing: [email protected].

Catch-up on the BK Landmark Podcast

The Landmark Bruton Knowles podcast

By now, you will be no doubt familiar with the first-ever podcast from Bruton Knowles, Landmark.

Earlier this summer, our pilot episode's expert panel, including Managing Partner, James Bailey, Head of Utilities Infrastructure North and South, Nigel Billingsley and Gill Froud, discuss the future of UK infrastructure in the wake of Labour's decisive General Election victory.

The trio took a deep dive into Labour's ambitious plans and their potential impact on the country's utilities, energy, road, and rail sectors.

Ahead of the next episode of Landmark, why not revisit our pilot edition, and see how the team thought the new government would get on with its ambitious plans.
