Yet another bug introduced with January's current channel update, that sadly affects many Access databases. Microsoft is still working on an official bug page. Until then you can follow this post https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/access/access-doesn-t-close-properly-a-remaining-background-process-can/m-p/3103807 which someone will ultimately provide the official link to. The bug appears to have been introduced by the VBA team which is separate than the Access team. There are other possible errors you will see including "Cannot Open any more databases". The good news is that if your database does not use VBA it will likely not be affected. The work around is to make the location of your database (you should do this for BOTH front and back ends if your back end is a Access database) a Trusted Location. Note that you need to do this on every computer running the application. If you have a large user base, there are ways to do this through the registry and through Office management as well. Below I have detailed the single user directions.
3. Click the Trust Center Settings button, then select Trusted Locations
4. If your path is on the network, make sure that the "Allow Trusted Locations on my network (not recommended)" checkbox is selected. If not select it.
5. Use the Add new location button
6. Put the path (include the / at the end) in the Path section at the top, click OK
7. Select OK
8. Close your database and reopen.
