The New Currency: Attention
Mastering the Art of Attention
In a world saturated with stimuli; where our senses are constantly bombarded by information, attention emerges as a new currency. It is a precious resource we own. One that demands careful and wise management. Every day it is fruitful to ask ourselves: will I give my attention to this or that? Will it bring harmony and/or love to my heart or merely consume me? Will it enrich my soul and revive my energy or deplete me? I call this guarding our attention.

The Invisible Power: Noticing Our Attention
The tricky thing about attention is that it often goes unnoticed. We may not realize where our focus drifts, and yet mastering this redirection is essential. When we intentionally notice where our attention goes and learn to guide it, we unlock a certain kind of power. This self-possession, this conscious direction of attention is a form of liberation. It’s an acknowledgement that our attention is a force we possess and it is within our power to harness it.

Overcoming Attention Craving
Freeing ourselves from what I call “attention craving” is crucial. When we crave the attention of status, fame, people’s approval, social media, or other external validations, these entities gain power over us. This is because we unconsciously have attached our worth to these and feel that our value is incomplete without external validations.?
?
Training ourselves to detach from these cravings is vital to owning and freeing our hearts, minds and souls. We must treat our attention as something extremely valuable. If we crave something’s attention, that thing holds power over us. When we notice this, it is important to pause and reclaim our hearts, minds and souls.
?
A central tenet in Buddhism is: “Attachment is the root of suffering” and that includes attachment to craving attention.
?
When we are highly attentive, we operate at our best. Owning our attention without allowing distractions to syphon our energy is key to achieving great productivity. By resisting the temptation of distractions and attachments, we maintain our power.

Attention is like a mental muscle that can be strengthened with practice. Meditation is an effective way to train this muscle because it involves the practice of bringing back our attention and directing it towards what we desire. Through meditation, we learn to master our attention and remain in control. Similarly, mindfulness helps calm stormy emotions and distractions, enabling us to focus better.
