New Curators opens Firelei Báez: Sue?o de la Madrugada (A Midnight’s Dream)

I am very proud of our inaugural cohort of New Curators fellows whose exhibition Firelei Báez: Sue?o de la Madrugada (A Midnight’s Dream) opened at the South London Gallery a few days ago. Our fellows have been involved in all aspects of curating this show – early meetings last September with the artist; helping her do research; looking into writers and artists she’s interested in from Hélio Oiticica and Ana Mendieta to Saidiya Hartman and édouard Glissant; ordering aluminium, canvas, tarpaulin, neon, sand, and foliage; finding antique illustrated books for her small drawings; studio visits in Bruton, Somerset; working on the plans for the installation of five rooms of the show; writing press releases and wall texts and captions; designing a gallery leaflet; physically assisting on the installation (which was quite a feat); work on the publication, conceiving a public programme and now starting to deliver it.

This training is the real deal. No hypotheticals, no controlled situations in which everything goes according to plan. The fellows have worked through some real challenges and the result is spectacular. If you're in London please come and see the show (open until 8 Sept) or attend one of the curators's tours and hear for yourselves how brilliant these young people are. https://www.southlondongallery.org/whats-on/events/
